i have bought my colt R in Aug this year, the first week i had my colt,i took it to Tint-a-car to get both front small and large window tinted,a week later i found more than a few hair line scratches on both large window,i first though was the workmanship issue,so i took it back and they explained its because the lower rubber seal caught all the dust and sand when you wind the window up and down,it scratch the window tint, therefore the people at tint-a-car cut off that lower rubber seal and replace the new tint again for nothing.

Ater one week,i found the scratches on both front window again and there is nothing can do cause the top window rubber is fairy hard and sitting too tight to the window,so finally i took it back to tint-a-car asked them to taken it off both front large window tint and untouch the small one.

the people at tint-a-car said some euro car like mercedes and audi not recommend window tinting.

it happens to my wife's car too ,she had the colt rg auto 2 yrs ago but i didnt take any notice at all till i found scratches on my colt r cause i rarely drove her colt, but 3 weeks ago, she had a small accident and it wrote off, AAMI paid me $ 16,000 as agreed value within 1 week, and i bought a new Yaris auto for my wife ,and it handles a lot better than the colt auto.

hmm......don't know what happened with yours, but my tint hasn't give me any issues yet. Had it for about 2 wks....fingers crossed. I really liked my tint, made my recaro so hidden away :D

As for getting a Yaris, good choice. For the small / non performance car segment, nothing comes close to the quality of Yaris.

i was going to get it tinted but the boys at mitsu said it would set me back 350 just for the fronts to be done. what a joke:p
Hopefully this tint problem is a one off or small minority.

My tint which was done by the dealership as part of the deal is now starting to show thin scratches. These scratches run vertically up and down. Must be due to dust and grit particles causing it when the window is wound up and down. But I can't really tell if the scratches are on the glass or on the actual tint itself.

The scratches is surely on the tint, its really nothing you could do,just ask the dealership to take it back where the tint has done to take it off.;)

G'day Gents,

Any developments on the scratched-tint issue? My car's doing it as well and it's starting to bug me. Might some films be less prone to scratching than others?

Thanks

Guys, just so you know. MMAL dont recommend tint on the front windows of any of our new cars which have privacy glass. The dealer concerned shoudl have told you that. Basically the tolerances are TINY compared to other news cars. We originally had an outlander VR-X with the same issues.

We now get the customers who really insist on tint to sign a waiver, we will still do it for them if they just HAVE to have it, but I recommend against as it casues trouble down the road, and any dealer worth their salt should tell you that.

I cant speak for every dealer obviously, but they should explain that to you, (I know I do as I dont want an unhappy customer down the road, plus most customers dont mind about the no tinting if you tell them before the purchase...well, at least in my experience)

Once again, DO NOT tint an R-colt's front windows. It may very well cause the problems you guys are experiencing.

hahaha why isn't the front privacy glass like the back to begin with?? is it illegal?

and btw i didn't sign any waiver so my dealer will be retintin my windows in the future.. ;)

nope that dark on the front is not legal. I would have prefured a lil darker on the front than it is.

I bought my Colt from Chadstone Mitsubishi and I installed tints on my front windows. Yes, scratches are apparent and I wished there was McCoy to advise me on such issues :( In fact if he was there before I would have gotten the Ralliart Colt :(

did you guys have a harder tint applied that is "supposed" to be scratch resistant. I had this installed on 3 cars and never had any issues. I havent donethe Rcolt yet but it was going to happen soon.

I suppose you just have not open the window as much as you normally do.

Stopping going to Mcdonald and ordering those crap burgers. lol

Bugger! Sorry gavin I wish I had of been here sooner too, I would have advised not to tint the front windows. :( If you ever drop by for service etc, say hello and have a coffee.)

P.S. Ralliart customers now get a free loan car at service intervals (booked through me not service dept), and the loan car is an R-colt so you'll feel right at home

My mum has the normal colt...her front tint scratched off too. They fixed it by re-doing the tint and adding a thin felt material to protect the tint passing over the hard pastic bit. Has been 3 months and still looks good.

Does anyone know how the inside rubber strip is removed from the door? If we can get it out, and have a look at it, making modifications should be very difficult.

Do you mean modding the inside rubber strip to stop the tint damage?

For me, my interior front window tint's pretty scratched, but i don't care much about it as it only shows inside and looks perfect from outside. Afterall, the whole purpose of it (for me), is to have more privacy and reduce heat.

A couple of people have mentioned modding the rubber strip, with a piece of felt to stop the scratching. It's probably not very difficult.

If it's just rubber, you're going to need to get Moleskin / Felt.

There are sites in the US that will sell you enough for a family car for about 15 dollars shipped.

Hey guys. Has anyone had any luck getting these felt lined window rubbers? Man its getting warm now & I'd like to get the fronts tinted to cut down on the heat & rays but this scratching issue is putting me off.

This is my only car that I've not had tinting since new :(

mine was tinted by the dealer without me even asking for it...

it was one that they kept on display for ages... so they did the tinting to make it look nice... and i just bought it off them 'as is'...

i've got 1 very small horizontal scratch on the passenger size :(

had it for less than 3 weeks...

i just now open the rear windows instead... silly... but anyway...

Thanks for the update & info guys.

RRR: looks like an option but I'm not sure I'm comfortable with prying open the lip that the seal sits on more. Thanks for the link though.

I had a closer look y'day & the external window seal is felt lined! I wonder why they didn't use the same for the interior seal? Cost cutting perhaps. The interior window seal is just plain rubber. No wonder the window tinting gets scratched as the window moves up & down :(
