*NOTE: Not sure if that also applies to Ralliart Colt Version R.

What does these thing do?

BOV = Blow Off Value. Basically, its the thing that helps to prevent excessive boost build up. For instance, you have a load of boosted/compressed air on its way to your engine, but suddenly, you decided to slow down by letting go your accelerator. This will shut the intake manifold and let all the remaining compressed air got nowhere to go? This is when you need a BOV to release these excessive compressed air.

Stock RColt already come with a BOV, but made of plastic. This is not only not reliable in long term with possible leak. Hence, the need for aftermarket BOV..... and not to mention how good it will sound :p

ummm... dude...
it does NOT have a BOV it has a DUMP VALVE IT IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT!
it is actually more efecent and reliable!

BOV =
engine intake manifold closes on gear change (when you release the peddle as you should unless you want to stuff your gear box), bov releases the air back the to out side to prevent hard presure on the turbo that cannot send it to the engine

this also has the side effect, if the engine is not orignally fitted with a bov(a closed system such as the RColt), of over richining the mixture and screwing the tune on the engine between changes as the amount of air in the system has changed without the ECU's control.

in short you sacrafice engine response on gear change for a 'psst' noise. damn ricing

Dump Valve=
dump valve, simply pushes the air back to the front of the system so that it recirulates. the ECU at this point still has full controll of the system, fuel mixtures are good and youll maintain your gear change response.

:D Now this is the sort of usefull information and debate I like to read it was a treat to have my 16 year old son sitting next to me when I was reading this information.
 He had been in my ear saying all my friends have a BOV "It sounds so cool"
and their car are hot (tricked up) you sould get one it would make your Colt so much cooler.
:) On the up side he read your (COLTART) response and said "Does that mean it would stuff the engine?" Yes was my reply as a rich mixture can do a heaps of damage over time as well as make the Federal Goverment a lot richer from their fuel excise.

Yes, stock by-pass valve is the best. If you aren't boosting so high til your stock by-pass valve is leaking, then keep it stock. Else change to a aftermarket BOV that can hold higher boost.

Add on to what lovecolt mentioned. BOV do more than releasing the air (shut off from the throttle body and returning back) to the atmosphere. It prevent the returning compressed air (back pressure) from damaging your turbo.

In fact, that's the purpose of all the BOV/dump valve/by-pass valve. To prevent back pressure from damaging your turbo when the throttle body is shut.

if you do this you will also want to change your fuel managment as the ECU will still ruin the mixture. another alternative is just to buy a larger capasity dump valve for about $30 that wont require any serius mods other then remove and replace as they are all of a bosh design.

anyone put a BOV on their car yet? i've got my apexi one off my old car and wanting to put that on....

back to your original debate on BOV

WHHHHOOOOOSHHH!!!!!!!....why buy a turbo if u can't whoosh =P....go for a V8 otherwise....hehehe =)

The RColt going to disappoint you. So far no BOV can be fitted on without the CEL lights up.

what about one of the GFB one that can be vented to and also plumback

Actually, i'm not sure if it is a BOV or DUMP Value in the first time. Last time when my mate changed into a Blitz BOV, it replaced the factory plastic one. Hence i would assume it is a BOV.

I was thinking about plumpback BOV idea too. I know Atmo BOV always cause issues (even my previous 200sx has issue if BOV is atmo, hence do plumpback in the end, which works). Hence, i might try out plumping back a aftermarket BOV and see if it works. You guys might think a plumpback BOV has no "psst" sound, but in actual fact, as long as you have a open airbox (cut a bigger hole before the filter) or pod filter, the sound is still very audible. Not only its legal (widen air box hole option), but also achieve what we want from a BOV. ;) At least that what i done with my previous 200sx.

thoes GFB ones can vent and be plumback at the same time to still putting air back into the intake to keep the car running right as well as the normal sound form the BOV

google bosh dump valve and learn what you have sitting dead in front of you in your engine bay. the pipeing is also all wrong for a BOV

Calm down there! I admit i ain't a guru in mechanical stuff, hence feel free to correct me. However, the attitude is not appreciated.

doesn't matter what it is they all do the same sort of thing. they are there for when the TB shuts. the high pressure air has no where to go, so then the pressure builds up stopping the turbo, the turbo is just an air pump you close of where the air is going it will slow the turbo down/stop. the dump valve/ BOV is there to let the high pressure air out and keep the turbo spinning.
