There’s a new Mitsubishi Lancer just around the corner and a little later, a new Lancer Evo10 will make an appearance, but keen drivers might like to look at a current variant of the Lancer Evo IX before it disappears from the new car scene. Mitsubishi sneakily launched an enhanced version of the Evo IX last year in extremely limited numbers and at a significant price jump on the standard version.
Called the TMR220, this Evo scores more kit, more aggressive looks and improved acceleration and handling thanks to the efforts of Ralliart. This is essentially the road-going version of the Lancer used in competitive rallying.
The TMR220 is targeted specifically at the regular sprint or hill climb enthusiast who still enjoys driving their Evo during the week. It offers improvements over the road vehicle in a package that is fully ADR compliant and is fitted with a unique TMR identification plate verifying the authenticity. It is available from the 40 Ralliart dealers around Australia. From an initial batch, a few still remain.
To suit spirited driving, the car has improved power, braking, vehicle balance and aerodynamics. It is readily identifiable by the distinctive appearance of the aero parts and wheels. Under the bonnet, TMR has developed a special engine exhaust pipe that downstream mates with a competition centre pipe and stainless steel pipe and muffler.
Being able to deliver the power in a more linear and progressive way assists with the launch of the vehicle from a standing start as well as giving the driver improved control when balancing the vehicle through twists and turns.
Traction is provided through Pirelli P-Zero Roso 235/40R18 tyres mounted to open-faced 8.5-inch rims. The open-face rim design allows maximum cooling air onto the six piston front calipers operating on thicker 343mm front discs. The rear brakes are the standard Brembo twin-piston calipers and braided brake lines are fitted to improve pedal feel and heat resistance.
To set a vehicle up for optimum handling, the balancing of the corner weights is a key factor. The Ralliart KYB suspension, fitted with increased rate 65mm diameter coil springs, has adjustable spring platforms. As it leaves the workshop, ride height is set at 20mm lower in the front and 15mm in the rear. The gas-filled dampers are rebound adjustable.
Aluminium strut tower braces are fitted front and rear for added chassis strength. More instruments are provided inside and accent panels have been upgraded with carbon fibre look enhancing the sporty feel of the vehicle. A premium audio system is also part of the package.
