If you press down the clutch and you hear a warring noise or a noise that sounds like a dry grinding bearing then that will be your Thrust Race 9 times out of 10. Especially with Sach's Clutch assembly’s it is highly typical of these thrust races.
VW and Audi have been using them for decades The problem first showed up in the VW kombi's and Beetles in the late 60s and carried through to the Golf’s and Passat's.
The only true cure is for a replacement to be fitted do not allow the dealer to kid you as if you have a noisy Thrust Race it may sound better for a time but as it wears it will start to only get worse.
The Dealer may claim that you have been riding the clutch in other words that you hold the clutch down at traffic lights and this is the cause of the problem don't even let them start this line with you.
Then dealer may then claim it is a wearing part and you will have to pay for it's replacement as wear and tear is not covered by the new car warranty. NB: This is one of the oldest tricks in the book.
You should send a letter by "REGISTERED MAIL" to your dealer requesting that the Thrust Race be replaced as it is faulty. . Along with copies of the (2 independent assessments)
You should state that as it has been a fault since new or from the date or from how many km’s on the clock you first noticed this defect. You will also need to state that you will not be held responsible for any costs involved in it's replacement. Make this very clear.
The date that you have asked the dealer about this problem who you spoke to and their reply would also be useful information to include in your letter.
You may need to get an independent assessment from a brake and clutch specialist to back your claim two assessments would be better.
Basically the dealer will try to put you off and avoid this as it is a major warranty claim and involves removal of the gearbox from the car for fitment of the new Thrust Race and the dealer has no guarantee that the new Thrust Race will be any better than the old one he has just removed.
