DECA Daze....

Last Saturday was EXE's second DECA Day for the year and I had a status to maintain. Last time I came 3rd in Fwd and 13th overall. Not to shabby for a first event.

Preparation:
Whiteline rear swaybar, 4x KU36's and a service at TMR. Plus a rather sleepless week due to interstate work.

Event:
The day consisted of 12 timed events accross 6 different courses. Two runs on each. Four courses were based on the skidpan using cones, the other two used the backtracks with chicanes to moderate speeds. Each course had a standing start and finished in an end box. Add 5 seconds for each cone hit, add 60 seconds for a wrong direction. There were 48 entrants with vehicles including Supras, Carrera S, Lotus Elise, Z4, Mx5s, Evos, Cilecas, Mini Clubman, Skylines and a couple of 1600s.
The first half of the day entrants were separated into two groups with individual time trials on separate courses. After lunch, battles began on the skidpan for the last two courses. Anyone care to guess the result between a stock RColt and a stripped Evo IX running ethanol?

Colt vs Evo
Run 1: 48:46 vs 48:44
Run 2: 43:29 vs 44:43

For Video proof go here (http://13thstudio.com.au/exe-deca/colt_vs_evo.mp4). (This was run 1, we both hit the first cone...)

It turns out I was only using three wheels most of the time...

Results:
1st - 1995 Toyota Supra
2nd - 1998 Lotus Elise
3rd - 04 Subaru Impreza WRX
4th - 1999 BMW M Roadster
5th - 1991 Nissan Silvia
6th - Nissan Skyline R33 Gtst
7th - 09 Mitsubishi Colt Ralliart
8th - 2000 Toyota Celica
9th - 1990 Nissan R31 Skyline
10th- 2008 Ford Focus XR5

Which means... 1st Fwd 09 Mitsubishi Colt Ralliart !!!! :D

I'm not that quick. The Evo I was "battling" did a 1:20 round Sanddown the week before. It's just that the Evo's turning circle sucks! Can't do handbrake turns further than 90 degrees.
Also depends how many mistakes are made... one wrong direction can cost several places overall, as I discovered last time. Quick clean lines are the best at DECA.
I have to admit that the courses were biased towards Rwd cars, and again one of the primary orginisers won. The other primary orginiser (my Bro) came 9th.:p

Lol, the colt's exhaust sounded pretty cool until I realised it was the Evo next to you! Great effort from what is a pretty near to stock rcolt, just goes to prove you don't need gobs of power to get somewhere in these events.

4WD's have too much understeer for tight turning.

Did u find that the Whiteline swaybar tends to lift the inside rear more often?

It should help lift a corner, I have found that my coil overs will lift corners all the time, You can feel the car do it, But there is a trick to doing it, You cant head into the corner fast as hell, you will loose the front end traction before the rear lifts, some in slower wider, turn tight and balance the weight between the fwd and aft of the car and it will lift.

Looks like fun, beaut day for it too! I'm jealous :/ I definitely want to go to the next one! I think I'd make it round in under 5 minutes with my almost bald AD07 :P

Did you have ASC turned off for your runs? I was hoping you'd yank the handbrake some more to lessen the wide cornering lol!

To be honest it was probably the combination of swaybar and tyres that allowed such hight. The skidpan is usually fairly slippery but it was quite difficult to get the back end to slide, with or without the handbrake, on fresh tyres. However the swaybar, i believe, allowed me better traction with both front tyres. Less time spinning at the front = more go and therefore less time. :)
Stiffer springs would lessen the body roll and therefore reduce the amount of 'air' time for the rear wheels as well. There would also be a greater tendancy to lift the passenger side rear wheel due to less 'ballast' on that side of the car...

ASC/TC was turned off on the skidpan, but was left on for the backtrack where there are things to hit if you leave the road. (Self preservation)

In local SA gymkhana events, there's a guy who drives an old-school honda prelude (circa early 1980's small hathcback, remember them? :-) ) who consistently puts modern 4WD turbo cars to shame! Only mod is a hydraulic handbrake. So do the old-school topless mini mokes (albeit purpose built gymkhana cars)

FWD cars do very well at this style of motorsport....RWD cars bag too hard and 4WD cars start understeering chronically with too much traction to deal with.

Well done Red, i like alot!
