Hi all - as the title suggests, any comments as to whether a 17x7.5 42 ET rim and 245/35 R17 tyre [Khumo KU19] combination would fit the colt? I know that it meets the design rules rules as per width and diameter increases, however I have no idea on whether the tyre is too wide for the rim, or whether the overall combination would fit in the wheel arch. This is for standard suspension on a coltr, not lowered. Cheers.

illigal as the tyre is too wide. even a 225/45 is classed as illigal width for our car. why would you want to put 245s on anyway?? on standard suspension yes it would fit in theory but why. and 245 is way too wide for a 7.5" rim
try a 215 instead

!!!
Tyres are WAY out! The rims are fine but you should run 215/40/17 or 225/40/17 at MAX cause even on stock any higher or wider you are going to scrub bad!

thats false by Queensland regulation we can run a 265 legally as max i looked at the rules last week
but the problem with a 245 wide tyre is that the wheels will hit the inside guard and basically the chassis

I would expect it's because you are buying off second hand with tyres on it already. But yes, I do think it's too wide for our car

Thanks guys - as filofaith states for Queensland, same for WA, we can go to +30% or 265 in width as per the Australian code of practice. See page 16 of this document:
http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/vehicle_regulation/bulletin/pdf/NCOP11_Section_LS_Suspension_and_steering_3Feb2006 .pdf
Reason for the width was that it complied with the diameter below 15mm requirement, however I was uncertain whether it would scrub the inside of the guards and/or chassis. I had noted that some are/were running 235 width here, maybe on a 16" but higher profile apparenlty without problems [yet this would go above the +15mm diameter restriction], so was wondering just how wide it could go. No doubt, the opinion is pretty unanimous that it is too wide! Will start considering other options - thanks for your time and input. Cheers.

i'm running what rowan is running which is 225/45/16 on 16x8 and thats just clearing the inner guards on full lock. Even if it legal to run that size in your state doesnt mean you should. For a 7.5" rim you should aim for 215/225 at max and try running a lower profile when doing so.

Thanks, ommeh. Yeah, what is legally possible and what will fit are obviously different things, as well as to whether one should or not and whether a 245 wide tyre would fit on a 7.5" rim are also other factors. If a 225/45 on a 16x8 is close to scrubbing then that gives me an idea as to how wide overall I can safely go.
My initial reason for asking was due to it appearing that when punching tyre profiles and widths into a tyre calculator that there is not alot of difference over the stock size tyre that one can increase upon while keeping within the Aus code of practice. So my reasoning was if I was going to change rims, other than for purely cosmetic reasons, what contact increase could I achieve. At this rate it only looks like I can increase in width from 205 to 215 going from 16" to 17" while keeping within the diameter restrictions - the 245/35 was the only other tyre I had been able to find that was wider than 215 and kept within the the diameter restriction due to its profile.
Ahh, decisions, decisions, decisions - just to make the car look a little different, yet ideally be warranted for the money outlay :). Cheers

245 width is likely to overstretch the 7.5JJ rim profile...
and then theres the serious srubbing issue front and back...
the very most sld stop at 235 for 17 inch...but then again one need to file down the wheel arc, especially the rear to avoid scrapping..front need to seek clerance from the shocks...
I m on 16 inch rims with +38 offset, dressed with Fed 595 RSR 205/50/R16 tires...5mm spacers front and 10mm spacers rear...have to file down the wheer arc for the back cos its flushed with the wheel arc...as for front, on lowered coils and negative camber, hasnt scrap the fenders and also cleared the shocks during full lock turns...

The Federal tyres give a wider slection of tyre sizes which makes things a little more interesting by providing a 225/35-17 which is just shy of the stock diameter. However, looks like the 215/40-17 on a 7" wider rim is the safest fit overall. Now to decide whether spending +$2K on rims and tyres for aesthetic reasons is really worth it. Thanks for everyone's input, much appreciated. Cheers.
Hey Something got a link or a pic to post of the wheels your keen on, I'm soon going that way too after i lwr the Rcolt and wouldn't mind seeing what others thoughts are on wheels that suit a red Rcolt.
FYI repco have just put out their cataloge with 20% off king springs.

If the rims are lighter then stock then yes because every 1kg you save on rims/tyres/suspension you save about 10kg in overall wieght (Correct if wrong)

@-G- - was thinking of these as they offer a little bit of bling along with the black rims - they are also local to me:
http://www.modyourcar.com.au/momo-corse-wheel--black--17inch-x-75inch--et42-4100-p9449
I also quite like these - similar to the above but a little more subtle:

Alas, some stuff is difficult to locate locally - Federal Tyres do not list any suppliers in WA for example...
@ommeh - good point about the weight of the rims - pity so many do not state their weight, except to state that they are 'light' rims. I have no idea how much the 2008 rims weigh either, so I guess it at this stage my main driver here is aestheticsm although a lower profile would be nice.

neither of thoes will fit due to the stud pattern being wrong.
Downside about the colt is we use 4x114.3 not as common on wheels.

@Macca - the pic is wrong for the Momo corse rims, however the rims are dual 4x100/114.3 - as for the GF7 ones, yeah, I posted the wrong link - this is the correct one - and it should be DC5, not GF7 - damn pics all look the same when they're smallish:

@something,
bro best to go for 215 width for Fed RSR, i.e if you are going this way...the special thing abt these tires are that the side walls are really bulging out...resembling F1 tires...might suit your preference for fat tires....
I have compared Fed RSR tires with Hankook RS2 (215/45/R16) tires...you can check under my pics of the hankook tires in "Members Ride" section...
guess wat? Fed RSR 205 width tires is the same width compared with 215 street tires such as Hankook's...

Thanks, ColtVerR - I will need to do something to track down the Federal tyres in Perth as Federal do not list any distributors here - but you are right, I do like the buldging sidewall idea! Cheers.

@ColtVerR - apparently Federal tyres are only stocked by one or two retailers locally, and prices have gone up 'heaps' according to the Perth WRX forum, so would depend on price in the end no doubt.
BTW, ELEGNT does mean kilometres when he mentions "k's"

Very tasteful, I'm definitely going down a similar route also, glossy black with a touch of polished wheel.
Firstly i will lower the Rcolt then see how much room is available, hopefully 18" wheels with the right tire profile will be ok.

07-09-2010, 10:29 PM
The closest 18" I could find were 215/35 and they are about 2 mm over diameter - so, I guess it depends just how much you are prepared to stretch the design guidlelines with insurance and/or warranty. I couldn't find any 205/35 which would be fine, or 215/30's, so if you do find at tyre for the 18" let me know!
If you are looking at lowering, no doubt would be best to look at rims after - I am aiming at keeping the stock height and [hopefully] let the lower tyre profile take a little bit of the roll off. Cheers.
