If Mitsubishi only do one thing right, is build dashs. Every mitsi is a dream to work on. Colt is no different. Swapped out the CD for a 7" DVD. Took me 14 minutes. My fastest time ever is 8 minutes in a CE Lancer/Mirage. This is even faster than a Commodore! (18 minutes)
Compared to the last job I did. New Barina. Took me OVER 2 hours! Unbelieveable.
Anyway if anyone wants any hints or tips, or is worried about it, let me know, post any questions or comments here. RColt has a fantastic stock CD but poor stereo, so I'm sure those who havn't swapped out are thinking it.
I have huge experience from 8 years of car audio sales and install so fire away. I've heard the stupidest question so don't embarrased, by the way.

There was only one rattle in my dash since new. Came from the dash, the only time it stopped was if I opened the glovebox fully, as in unclip it so it swung to the floor. It was a very easy fix, there is a bracket that I loosened and adjusted so it had the same load as the glovebox opened all the way down. Bye bye rattle :)
But yes, easy as to install head unit and decent speakers. Best daily car i recall having.

With ICE such a desired attribute in cars these days, it shocks me to see so many rcolt on carsales with stock head units... Unless they've swapped them out before selling...
I love the colt as its so easy to get phat music out of... My mates with commies and falcons have to produce oodles of bass in the boot to punch through the seat and immerse the space, but by that time it sounds pretty ordinary...

getting back to putting the screens in the grandis... do most DVD head units have video outs to support headrest monitors... what do i have to look for?

Everything DVD is compatible. DVD players (and even most roof mount screen with in-built players) have standard RCA out. Headrest monitors will have power, earth and 2 video inputs. The thing you need to worry about is audio. If your not watching the movie your not going to want to listen to it. You either need zone by zone or headphones. Lots if options. My screens have no audio because my kids will watch anything at the moment, but soon enough I'm going to RCA audio to the back of the console and convert it to dual 3.5mm audio plugs so they can plug in headphones. But you can also go infra-red headphones (cordless) and use rear speakers or add speakers through a small cheap amp (you can get an amp that would do the job on fleabay for $9)
Grandis has the same reciever as colt, so I would suggest Sony XAV-W1 DVD reciever (Currently $510 at ryda.com or $579 at WOW) It has DVD player built in, 7" screen, does GIGA MP3, 5.1 DOLBY surround, and zone by zone. That way you can play DVD through all your screens (headrest or roof mount) and audio through your rear speakers, then listen to the radio or iPod through the front speakers (if you buy iPod adaptor) If you want to play DVD in the back and CD in the front you could just buy a cheap cd player and run it into the inputs. You can also add Playstation or run video from iPod through the inputs. And if you want to has audio outputs for amps/subs. But still a basic system with not too many features so will do what you want but not much else.
As for screens I used Sony 6.2" stand alone screens $149 each, but don't think they are available anymore. Kenwood screens are VERY nice but around $600 each. A roof mount will come in around $300 and you'll only need one and you can go anything up to 15"
P.S. You can tell the Grandis is designed by asians. It has the ability to have the swivelling captains chairs for rear access. They love that shit so the can have family conferences in heavy traffic. Looks a lot like Tarago inside.
Rockstar.
just wondering which new unit you put in, pros and cons of the unit. is it a touch screen .
and did you need a adapter plug to plug in all the original wiring looms and if so where did you purchase them and how much.?
details details.
cheers.

I used the unit I recommended. Sony XAV-W1. It's so cheap. A regular CD player with 5 channel RCA out (front, rear and sub) is $450, and for an extra hundred I got DVD and 7" screen. It is a touch screen, very wanky. You can upload your own jpegs as backgounds (I put pics of the car on it! How egotistical is that?) It has 7 channel EQ.
Not too mny pro's. Very clear screen, easy to use, GIGA MP3.
Cons, again not too many. Audio quality isn't top of the line (last unit was top of the range Pioneer) but is still good. Not a great amount of features. Nothing missing that I need but a few more things would be good. The ability to make the clock bigger, for instance. Skip buttons on the chassis instead of the screen. The ability to turn off the screen but leave the unit running (Factory Lancer DVD has this. Good at night. Especially since the unit is very bright at night, even on maximum dimmer)
All in all a good unit. I put the same in a friends car because it's very easy to install compared to slide out Kenwood I had in BA Falcon. The screen takes up so much space they have an umbilical cord to an external amp. Good because you can mount in an accessable location for future hook-ups, but bad because you need somewhere to stick it.
I don't use adaptors. Very hard to get one to suit car AND unit. You can get one to fit car from Aerpro (stocked everywhere) and then solder it to loom that comes with unit (all colour coded) But I use bootlace ferrules. Very expensive and the tool to crimp them is $95 but I have heaps left over becuase they come in thousands and I use sidies. Then just crimp over the bare end of the wire and make a male ISO pin to plug into pretty much any loom. Then you can just unplug and plug in the old unit if you want.
The Colt loom is a fairly big ISO plug so you can use male mini blade crimp terminals and crimp them on the wires then slightly compress them with pliers and they JUST fit diagonally. Although difficult because with the insulated ends it covers the next hole for the next pin! Can be done and will only cost $4 for crimp terminals.
