Im up for it.
Is it possible to ship it direct from Quaife UK to Germany? Because i do not want to pay for postage to AU and back. ;)
Mitsiman
08-05-2010, 11:49 AM
Unfortunatly not, all differentials come to Australia first in bulk packaging. But the freight would be minimal to ship back to Germany.

Freight is not the problem. ;)
Toll fees and other things Germany would want from me is what im not willing to pay. ;) UK is tollfree for me.

has anyone installed one of these yet and provided any feedback on them?
Mitsiman

The only two fitted are to two WA Members from our own workshop
so can we have a much detailed feedback about this unit? as they are not cheap and just want to make sure we'll get what we pay for.
also another question, does these only work under hard conering? do you feel any difference during normal daily drive? say feels more power etc?

Check above link for feedback on the differentials. Only good thins to say aout them.
There is a increased road feel at all times, but you definitly feel the difference under power around corners.
These work at all times when the vehicle is accelerating hard. At light throttle it acts just like origonal open differential

i put some feedback on the other differential thread but here's some more
it doesnt increase power but it increases grip... ie: wheelspin feels like heaps of power but its counter-productive to going faster... grip is the key
LSD works not only on hard tight cornering but on say a long 3rd gear bend where sometimes the Colt is prone to picking up the inside wheel under power. this no longer happens. launch is improved greatly, double the area (both wheels) are scrambling to get the car moving, not just one.
the car will torque steer a bit but it's not snappy torque steer, it's more of a stiffening of the steering. this is more pronounced in first gear, say pulling out of a side street, so doesn't really affect track work.
the steering also will become a little more weighty, but hardly noticeable.
also, be careful in the wet, because it's pretty easy to light up both fronts and the traction control has a hard time stopping both wheels sometimes (the ACS isn't designed to be clamping both wheels at once). i was coming out of the ramp onto the freeway this morning and grabbed 3rd and the car next to me got really close, really quick :p
the first week i got it in was a voyage of discovery....

bit far fetched but is quaife able to do a diff with custom ratio? Ie make 1st alot taller, to 1 loose the big gap between 1st and 2nd, and 2 to eliminate ALL wheelspin
Mitsiman
13-05-2010, 01:30 PM
No the diff only changes the differential unit. Youa re talking about actual gear ratios
taller??!!
would make the car slower and no-one wants that.

Not talking heaps taller but like 10 or so km faster in 1st. The reason ours spins up so bad in 1st is because it is so short it revs out at like 60 if you made it that little bit longer you would get keee spin and second would feel so long either

all powerful cars have trouble getting off the line it's just that FWD is much more pronounced
LSD helps close that hole in our cars, sticky tyres & anti-lift kits (could) help too... i'm sure dave can impart more wisdom, seeing that he drives a 500hp FWD car
but put it this way, changing the final drive ratio isnt the answer imo

i think rowan is on the ball polyponic told us that on his XR5 forum they were launch off 2nd gear as 1st gear was useless

a taller first gear would help but it would help yes by slowing the spinning down. BUt then again the minute you guys start tuning and make more power, the taller gear would end up same issue. Its unfortunatly side effect of our FWD application. Good suspension / LSD will make the best of teh situation, a good coil over strut kit will mimimise this greatly

I have been in a couple of XR5's with a quaife diff and the difference is amazing, more go off the line and better handling through the corners, if anyone has seen the focus RS the new quaife they added, yes it is actually a quaife diff, is one of main reasons they were able to put all that power through the front wheels.
A wise man once said,"no good having more power if you can't get it to the ground"

2nd gear launches are great
just dont expect your clutch to last very long
if you want to build a drag car, then you are starting with the wrong base

The other thing with xr5's is the turbo starts spooling at 1500revs so no where near the lag that you get in a colt, 2nd gear launchs in the xr5 dont need the quaiff its more to do with the gearing and the power distribution.

also having a much heavier engine sitting over the front wheels would help with traction

Are these quafes going to be 1 way or 1.5 ?
Are these quafes going to be 1 way or 1.5 ?
they are 1 way i believe as they only work when being driven
they are gear driven so no clutches to wear out

I am still interested in getting one of these, partially depending on final power figures. Anyone else (especially in the Sydney area) pipe up so maybe we can also get a bulk discount on the install.

We now have 5 Quaife units in stock again. Not sure how long they will last but we can always order more :)
Waiting on customs paperwork to come through but price is expected to be the same as always. Anyone interested flash tune provided at only $50.00 with every quaife differential ordered from this batch (Whislt they last). Nice way to celebrate the the advent of the new tuning now available.

Just as a bit of encouragement to colt owners.. I fitted up a Quaife LSD to my TL Magna gearbox (supplied/fitted by RPW) back in March .. I have totally stock power and even with crappy tyres (i have good ones now but when I first fitted it they were crap :P) you wouldn't believe the grip difference it makes. I broke my original diff and when I did the sums, already getting the gearbox in/out.. basically cost me a $1000 premium to get the LSD fitted over sorting out my existing box / getting a new box etc [was hard to find manual magna boxes at the time in WA]
I would honestly consider this modification as a first modification over anything (exhaust, etc) now that I have had it done.. before doing it you probably couldn't have convinced me of that.
Even on stock power the feel as you push it out through corners, etc.. is just awesome.. you can feel it progressively come on and the grip.. lots of fun. if you have done extensive power modifications then I think you would be mad not to consider it.
If/when I move on from this car, this would be one of the first modifications that I make I don't think I could live without it again.

Sorry I'm new to this...is it correct that you must change the bearing?
Mitsiman
24-03-2011, 12:45 PM
Yes because you need to press the bearings off the stock diff and they get damaged. Better to just put new bearings in with the new diff. they are worth around $80.00 for a set of bearings

Nah, going to get it installed by some pros somewhere, trying to find a very old very reputable mitsu tuning/performance house in Vic to install it, did wonder wether TMR would be the best guys to work with it, they install the Cusco(is it cusco?) ones there so I don't think they would mind doing just the labour. My plan for the colt has been the best daily possible with recipts for all work. Aside from a full exhaust and reflash Im nearing the end of my mod list with this. :)

For anyone interested, I am putting another differential order through to quaife in the next tweo weeks. In order to get my bulk discount with Quaife, I need to get up to ten units or more. I have two Colt units in stock this moment and looking ot move them fast (I am ordering more colt units from quaife with this next order).
These normall retail for $1450.00 with bearings. I have two units going on a special of $1300.00 with bearings. Great deal for any colt owner, direct fitment without any side effects and lifetime warranty from Quaife.
If your interested act fast.
