Yeah I think its a slightly noisy gearbox, but sounds healthy to me..
Sounds fairly similar to my old RS5F31V micra gearbox that had a factory viscous LSD. Except the colt makes some mechanical clunking noise sometimes when shifting from first to second.. I still think they are all healthy noises though.

Its still under warranty...doesnt hurt to take it for a check up so if it does persist, you have it documented.

I get the clunking noise, sometimes even high in 2nd to 3rd. It's pretty loud too. Even get it when I'm in the mountains just revving from 4000 - 5500rpm staying in 2nd accelerating through the corners.

I spoke to to Penrith mistubishi on tuesday concerning the noise and they will be checking it when its back for its first service

The noise in the gear box when reversing is pretty normal these days. almost all europein and jap manual car now do it.
Without going into too much technical, detail in a modern gear box the main and lay shafts (thus all gears) are constantly spinning at the same speed when the clutch in engaged (makes for easy gear meshing and improves life of syncro rings), but reverse gear is not part of the main shafts, because of this reverse gear must be straight (to make is very strong and cheap) cut. Straight cut gears are very noisey.

na every thread i have read said it was a "normal" funtion of the gearbox, apprently someone took thiers in and they said it was normal for the colt box to make that noise.

lovecolt: no, the wine'd up noise, or wizzing noise is a new one, maybe its also the different gearbox oil you have, did you use motul ? they are reknown for that noise.
Killercolt: still selling your ride mate ?
Ozmale: OMGosh i thought you were dead dude....where have you been hiding ?
Froggman: My guess is you have been granny shifting and not double clutching like you should be.....(FNF)
Mozcolt: stop stealing my pictures to make cool advanta's....

Hey Steve-b I pulled up this thread from ages ago so I didn't have to create a new one...
FNF? Please explain
I do granny clutch but that shouldn't screw the gearbox...

I don't have any issues whatsoever with mine.. and have no reason to suspect otherwise at this stage. There's always a few lemons in any mass produced item whether it be gearboxes or whacky inflatable flailing arm tube men. I wouldn't look too far into it.

If they're replacing the gearbox you should take the opportunity to put in a Ralliart LSD. The additional labour would be negligable.

If I could afford an lsd I would for sure put one in

They will replace the whole gearbox, not just the syncro
Herd that from the parts dude at my local, when i went in to get one buch from the shifter assy (they dont do just one, its the whole assy or nothing :'( )
and he said they had changed a whole cvt gearbox for a small issue!

the reason the noise is more prominent noise in reverse is due to the cut of the synchro. it is almost a straight cut gear like in a rally car :)

Got the car back today... gear box feels exactly the same, just a bit stiffer and a little less play

Just come home with the same problem today(2nd gear synchro). Pissing me off big time.

Took the car to Melville Mitsubishi, they tested the car briefly with me, confirmed it was 2nd gear synchro and told me the box had to come apart... I was expecting a new box as some of you have had, but went along with it.
Few hours later they give me a call saying they can't do it because they aren't a Ralliart dealer :|
Anyhow I picked it up a couple days later and checked they hadn't touched anything.
Down to Rockingham Mitsubishi (Ralliart dealer) and left it with them. Received a call today after they had driven it - They have to send off a request to replace the whole box. Good.
I've also noted the clutch issue I'm having (sounds like a bearing humming or groan during engagement, car completely warmed up). I doubt they managed to get it to make the noise. When I mentioned it they said they will have a look when the box is out. Not really expecting much there.
how long have rocko been a ralliart dealer? i thought there was just wangara, osborne park and midland

The gear itself is straight cut.
Do we even have a synchromesh on reverse?

Gearbox was a worry when I was looking at car. I used to drive a lot of CE - CH Lancer and every gearbox was in my opion, dodgy. It's just Mitsi making them strong and cheap. I've never seen a Mitsi with a dead gearbox though, but LOTS that make noise.
Our Mirage made a lot of noises from brand new. Under hard acceleration you had to be very careful shifting to second because it would crunch almost every time if you snapped it. Crap in drag races because you had to take an extra half a second to shift.
New Lancer box is ok though. Te shifter feels firmer and the throw isn't as long. And no noises.
I have wierd intermittant gearbox noises all the time.
I'm more worried about the noises when the traction control and ABS come on.
