Hey Guys...
Well I thought it was about time to put some pictures up of my baby evo. Has been a great car, have had it since sept 06 and it has 10,000 on the clock. I have put in some seat covers ( they are water-proof and grease-proof ), i have the "secret" ipod connection mounted in the empty din location and the new addition is the Advance Speed mini aeriel.
Enjoy.

Steve-B

Ali @ alto mitsy @ gordon. all prices quoted in my other thread are the delivered price. 4 oil filters @ 51 or 57, cant remember. thats only 200 bucks.

interesting thing, this new turbo timer has the parameters to show the current a/r ratio's and the 02 sensor readings as well as having a kill switch so if the handbrake isnt on the timer does work.
Very cool...

Where do you plan to mount the boost gauge, Steve?

Steve-B
24-05-2007, 02:35 PM
going to mount it on the dash, close to the edge near me, about the cd player. going to run the boost line throu the firewall, up the back of the dash and put a little hole in the dash and run the power and boost line up there. Make it look really neat. And when i have til, get an oil and water temp gauge.
turbo timer im going to mount in the space above the fog light / trac control switches. on the dash under the cluster on the right.
if that makes sense.

27AME
24-05-2007, 04:22 PM
How much was the boost guage?

Not sure I'm too keen on cutting holes in my dash... I want a blitz boost gauge, a/f ratio gauge, oil temp and water temp. there's no where to mount it all!

Anyone thought of making a fibreglass insert below the cd player?

Steve-B
24-05-2007, 04:40 PM
Im thinking 27ame, that if i went to sell it and the gauges i wanted to keep, buy a new top dash piece, they are all blue, and whats the max it could be, 200 bucks. i can live with that.
the gauge was 133 bucks.

27AME
24-05-2007, 05:40 PM
Yeah that's fair enough - just hope you don't get stung with the dash piece, you never know with OEM replacement parts!

I'm gonna have a gauge pod made up for below the CD player from left to right oil temp, a/f ratio and boost - that piece that sits inside most likely comes out so i won't have to worry about cutting holes.

Steve-B
25-05-2007, 09:29 AM
just buy the one off justjdm, its a blitz / defi one that looks identical to the ralliart one and fits a single din hole and is 1200 bucks. Cheaper that you could buy 3 or 4 gauges for with a controller and would come with all sensors.

lovecolt
25-05-2007, 10:06 AM
1 problem with those 3 in 1 din gauges, is that you can never really tell the exact numbers due to the smallish gauges. And its the defi one that looks identical to ralliart's.....because ralliart's a rebadged defi :)

Steve-B
25-05-2007, 11:09 AM
yeh, they are small to fit, and they are facing the back seat not the driver, so why have them at all.

Steve-B
30-05-2007, 07:24 PM
Didnt have time to hook up the power, as i had limited time and had to fix the lights on my bike as well. I am running the boost line and soon to be power lines into the dash, tastefully tape them in electrical tape and get a gromit to cover and neaten the whole, make it look professional and clean. Still have turbo timer and Apexi I Moni to install ( when I moni gets here )

Enjoy....

i didnt run it in the same line as white horse, as the other line seems to end up in the abs, and the line i taped into gauges and sends the boost pressure into the intake maniford, so id guess thats where its going to get the best reading.

Did you get a price on a replacement yet?

Steve-B
08-06-2007, 02:32 PM
Hey 27ame,
its pretty hard to get the top piece off. I just used my hands, but a blunt table / butter knife would help. the 4 tabs are quite hard to get off, and the back 2 ( ie the ones closet to the windscreen ) bend up. as you can see from the second last pic from the post before, the lid opens instead of lifts. if that makes sense. havent priced a new piece as i dont need one. Very happy with the way it turned out, just need a spare sec to power it up.

There is an easier way to remove the centre dash panel......

Drop down the glovebox as explained in the owner's manual.

Grab a powerful torch.

Shine the torch up through the open area under the dash towards the direction of the left hand corner of the centre dash panel. You will spot a light grey V shaped part pointing downwards.Push up on this piece.Presto, you have popped the corner of the centre dash panel.Lift panel gently upwards from the top of the dash. That's it!

Hey Steve. My 15,000 service isn't too far away (currently on 14,400).

And also - any chance you can let us know what the service cost?

Hey Richard,
Mate i got my service done @ alto mitsubishi up here @ gordon. That service centre is where there is a certified ralliart technician, they explained that costs and procedures to me, and did a good job of cleaning the interior, but slap stick on the outside. They rotate the tyres, check brake pads etc etc. The service i am not 100% sure of, as i supplied my own oil and filter, and got them to install the thermostat, which then they drained the coolant, replaced it and pressure tested the whole system. 524 all up. With all those extra's its hard to know the original set price. Best just to call or email them and ask.

As i mentioned to love colt, and i read by you, that an evo 9 oil filter fits our car, thus i dont see why an oil filter sandwich plate would fit too, i hope so they no development needed and lots available :D

Steve-B
29-08-2007, 09:29 AM
Macca mate, i am assuming, so please correct me if im wrong, but you havent seen a colt filter and an evo filter side by side ?
colt filter is twice as long as an evo one. So i you wanted to place a sandwich oil temp adaptor you could, you you could T the sensor into the oil return from the turbo, or feed lines somewhere. Doesnt have to be btwn the filter i guess. If thats what your getting at.

Macca
29-08-2007, 01:46 PM
i forgot all about a T piece on the oil lines.

but
http://www.clubvw.org.au/images/oxy_7.jpg

thats what im talking about, it connects to the block and has 2 outlets, one for each port from the block, so you can run sensors and oil coolers.

basically length of the filter is the only thing that doesnt matter, so if an evo filter screws on, so should a sandwich plate for an evo.

Those guys did a sterling job, so thanks for the advice.
I'm so used to Holden ripping me off for every penny that they can, so was surprised and relieved to see that their 15,000km service came in so cheaply - and that they hadn't charged me for any over the top unneccessary work :)

PS. Only disadvantage was having to drive down Lane Cove Road after dropping the car off - is it always like a car park at 7:45am? Took me 45mins to drive from there down to my work at Rhodes (I usually get to work in less than that amount of time from Seaforth)

Yep - that would usually be the case, but I novate my car through work and because of that my leasing agent pays the bills and hence makes the decision on what needs to be done, not me :(
Holden would never give me a copy of the worksheet they had performed on the car, so the first thing I ever new about it, was when SMB charged my leasing account with the average $600-$1000 for each service (and that was for a Barina). Especially when they're supposed to be providing a discount service for SMB. Just about every 15,000 service, they would put new tires on it - and I had no say in whether they could go ahead with that or not (the leasing agent made that decision and would always give them the go ahead).

Now that I'm novating the RColt is leased, it was great that the Mistubishi dealer actually gave me a copy of the worksheet, so very happy to see it come in just on $200 :)

Simply one of the best smelling air fresheners in the Japanese import industry. Very unusual and sweet smelling squash scent will make your car smell as good as it looks. This scent is so unusual, any U.S. air fresheners do not compare. With its terrific scent and attractive looking bottle, it makes the perfect combination. Carall Under Seat Squash Air Freshener (other one isnt strong enough for me, too subtle )
The Carall Under Seat Air Freshener is for the squash lover who prefer a hefty and strong dose of squash fragrance in their car without having an air freshner in view. How to explain squash without experiencing is not very easy, the scent is like a combination of sweet candy-like, bubble gum and lime soda all mixed into one. Try it and you will be back for more! Made by Carall Japan.

couldnt take a descent shot of the new shifter, garage was dark and i only have a mobile camera atm. BUT, the trust knob went on no fuss, and it also sits a descent 2-3cm's lower than the standard shifter. And to explain how here is it explained easily...lol

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/devilrolla12345/trustdia.jpg

basically cause the thread can go all the way up...which it doesnt, but more so than the standard shifter, it sits lower. and having the extra counter weight in the knob ( like the type r's titanium ones ) im sure with it sitting lower and the weight it will feel better to shift.

A bigger & heavier shift knob definitely improves the shifting feel in the RColt.

I have a 230 gram Razo gear shift knob on my RColt which I reckon must weigh at least 2.5 times that of the standard shift knob. I think mine is also 10-20mm lower than the standard height of the old knob due to the way it mounts to the shaft.

Its a good cheap improvement to smoothen the over notchy shift feel especially from 1st gear to 2nd gear. I don't feel I need to exert any extra force to get it moving for those that know about moments (m = f x d) hahaha

Macca

i just couldnt get the air bubbles and the lines out. to get it raound that curve you have to put some soapy water on it than place the tint on the light (dont peal the backing off yet)
Than with a squigee and a heat gun heat up an area and squigee an area and it will take the shape of the light than once you have done that cut out the shape you want.

i hope that helps, cograts too

PS it would work better if you leave the tail light on the car

yeah tmr, just so you know mate, getting a battery that is half the size and relatively the same power, thats called weight saving, and modifying the air box with a better intake than the stupid one we have, whilst still retaining the box and ralliart filter will help intake air temps etc etc, you dont need to have a track car to be interested in making smart mods. By changing my brake pads to non dusk ones as well, i wont have to spend so much time cleaning them...
If you want to flame everyone for their non mechanical and sometimes non kw related mods, maybe you would be better on another forum where that kinda thing is tolerated and encouraged.

ah killer, flip sent / sold me the headlight covers..lol
brake pads rnt a bitch, the front i did in about 11 mins, including wheel off and pads out and exchange, but the rear, you have to unbolt the handbrake clamp on the suspension arm, then you have to pull the handbrake cable out of its "thing" on the back of the caliper, Then you have to lever the handbrake mechanism to pull the handbrake cable completely off the rear brake cause the caliper wont swing with the cable connected. You need a 13mm socket and a 15mm spanner.

ok, well i did take it for a spin when i fitted the BOV.
what i noticed was that on full hardest, it goes really well, but 1 turn back it seems to take awhile for the boost to spool, but on 2 turns from hardest, it spools @ the same speed, you get a tight boosh noise, not psst. ALSO, what i found really interesting, is that when you accelerate instead of the boost spiking then coming down, and spiking again. It stays @ .7 bar, spikes to .8, drops to .7. In some gears i have found it spikes then drops to .7 .6 sometimes. But from what ive seen with the BOV in, it spikes hard, and holds to boost ALOT BETTER than the stock valve.

Looks great! nice job :)

Steve-B
06-12-2007, 09:18 AM
cheers julz, gosh ur quick with the replies...lol

Write up...
The battery has the same characteristics as the stock, cause the scangauge gives me the volt readout it has the same VLT when on accessory and when switched on / running ( i keep an eye on all my gauges ) You do have to modify the loom, ie cut the plastic sheath back to release the battery wires from it, not hard, just be careful and do it slowly. I retaped and put new wire cover over mine cause i have alot spare. With the battery tie downs, i bought smaller ones, had to cut them down even more, then painted them. I cut the stock tightening bars ( dont know their names ) down and rebent the ends and drilled new holes to hold the battery in, seems to work very very well. Removed the spare plastic and metal base from under the battery as this is a non spill battery im not worried to much about it going pop. Hmm what else, The billion needs to be pushed past the back of the headlight towards the guard before pulling it down to the foglamp, and there isnt enough room to push it straight down ( will take better pics on sat if its a nice day for the cruise ) Um, yeah cut the pvc 90degree down to fit and angled it abit towards the headlight, well as much as i could. Billion funnel is fitted, but i need to buy smaller screws for it, as they protrude too much at the moment.

So, the bad...
as usual cut my arms and hands up quite bad...but i dont really care. Went for a test drive and the intake temp was 21/22 degrees, which is ok / normal. Went and got petrol and reset my scangauge cause it funks out when you take the battery out and screws with the fuel/trip gauge. Now as i was driving the intake temp got up to 24/27 degrees, now it wasnt really warm last night and the point of a CAI is just that to get cold air. When you hit boost it sucks the air bigtime and the air temp dropped from 26 back to 24/23 but cruising it was noticeably afew degrees higher. I can think of afew reasons, the pvc to airbox isnt glued or siliconed in yet, as the car needed to be driven today and wouldnt of had enough time to cure/set. So maybe abit of hot engine air is getting in. Also the billion is too long and needs to be cut down, thus air can get in after the metal ring tie down on the pvc pipe as pictured. And lastly i think that the funnel isnt in the optimum position to get all the air, but these are all fine tuning things i can do.

NOW the good..
to set the premise, lets say the the current intake value is 100%, i would say the new setup would be working at atleast 180-200% now. When you take off in ur colt, and put ur foot down, you know how there is that pause, the boost winds up, then you feel the torque. Well when you put your foot down now, you feel the torque of the engine straight away, its a 1.5 but it still has torque i can assure you. Then the boost winds up and you are really starting to move, the air temp drops as the billion is working full ball. Also a point to note, with all the extra air, boosting past 4-5grand There IS NO DROP between boost and when the mivec kicks in. The car, with all the air in its lungs, and the bov holding the boost @ .7 - .8bar absolutley roars. And intake noise, OMGOSH as soon as it starts spooling you can here it ( the turbo ), its so much louder the spool. Then to wrap it all up, the BOV also seems louder, ie more air, more air to vent.

From here...
well i am still abit paranoid that water will get up there, so when it is raining heavy next, i have a ruler, masking tape and paper towel in the car, i am going to paper towel the ruler with tape, remove the stock funnel and stick the ruler in and see if it picks up any water...if it doesnt, happy days, it if does, i will have to modify the intake / billion. Also was thinking of making up a plate for the stock funnel hole to be covered for track days when it wouldnt be wet, so that the billion will be the sole intake. also a side / after though, with the ralliart filter working alot harder now to filter, i think it might bring the life of it down afew km's. Also stock filter and maybe k&n ( which i havent seen how deep they are ) might have probs with such a large diametre pvc pipe, as my ralliart filter is quite thin and didnt foul the pipe coming in the side...just a point to keep in mind if you are going to try this.

Any questions fire away.
Cheers
steve

you will definitely get water into the pipe when it rains but perhaps u can stuff a bit of foam into the end of hte pipe to soak it up a bit

Thoughts on water? Hrmzzz I usually drink the stuff, and in the mornings shower in it.

Steve, I dont think you will have to much of a problem with it, but maybe some foam would help, I just dont see how much though. If its sucking hard enough, wouldnt it suck droplets from a wet foam/sponge arrangement?

Maybe somthing like a removable sphagnum core?

why_bother
06-12-2007, 03:15 PM
In most places where water is an issue, there's a couple of methods I've seen used.

i) dessicant crystals - not going to work effectively here (too much moisture in the air, and you'd be forever changing them)

ii) drain hole/trap - the lowest part of any drainage system is usually a good spot to have one of these as this is where the water pools. It looks like you're fairly adept using the PVC piping, you could introduce another 'L' or maybe a 45 degree join just after the billion intake. If that were the case, you'd mount it so that the bend was on a slight decline towards the passengers wheel to allow for the water to pool there but still give a decent airflow.

Having a drain hole there shouldn't really affect your intake temp as it's in a low spot still near the front of the car, it's not going to really affect the airflow and it would only require a very (very) small hole at the lowest point (it's unlikely you'd need anything large. it's not like you're driving through 12 inches of water often).

I don't really see you getting too much water in there in the first place given the position of the intake, but prevention is better than cure.

Having said all of this, I haven't pulled it apart and don't really know how much area you have to work with. If this solution is not applicable please disregard this post.

Macca
06-12-2007, 03:21 PM
with the corrigations in the billion pipe, and the fact its going to havt to suck the water vertical and the fact you still have the standard hole i doubt there would be enough pressure to suck water up

example go poke a hole in a straw and try suck some water or what every you want to suck thru it. You will find thats its extreemley difficult. It would be the same principal with the billion AND the stock hole in the air box. (the billion being the straw in water, and the stock hole, the hole in the straw)

Steve-B
06-12-2007, 03:27 PM
all valid points, and worth considering.
i think compared to alot of the singapore guys, they have a high moisture / humidity and they run billions but not usually to the airbox but so t pod filter. I will just have to test if water is reaching the box, because really, even if the water reaches the box, i doubt there will be enough pressure to suck water from the bottom of the airbox throu the filter..
like i said, i will wait for a heavy rain and then test it.

Aby yeah just run one foggie for now, was even thinking today that i could cut a hole in the top of the metal shield for the intercooler and run the billion to that, and then the air would come through for the cooler and when the boost was up and the engine intake pressure high enough it would pull air up, even less chance of water...but we'll see, thats not really raming air from outside and im still eh if it has the ability. Time will tell.

How To Prevent Hydrolock

Drill a few 25-40mm holes in the intake tube after it enters the engine compartment. The engine will always draw air from wherever the engine finds is easiest, and it will not draw the heavier water into the engine.

30-12-2007, 12:41 PM
anything over .3bar i would get a BOV release if that is what you are asking.

Hit boost cut last night on .9bar so ive dropped it back down to .8bar today and it is running fine. I would say the boost comes on alot nicer and stronger with the MBC, so overall i am very happy with it so far.

lovecolt, your cvr might spike to .9bar, but mine actually holds at that level of boost through the rev range and all gears...

ah ok then cool - so for any boost under 0.3bar (~4.3psi) your bov doesnt open and make a psssht noise. So im assuming it doesnt vent and causes the pressure to be forced back down the turbo? You can probably tweak your spring tension a bit to make it less stiff (unscrew the top bit a little) and get it to vent sooner

Steve-B
30-12-2007, 01:47 PM
nar, i like it how it is now, cause with the spring @ where it is it holds the boost very well, im not after the psst, just the better pressure holding.

lovecolt
30-12-2007, 03:05 PM
no warning lights, and ive tested it in all gears, 1st to 5th, all .9bar spike with a .85bar holding.
drives real nice.

So, which one's correct? holding boost at 0.85 or 0.9? :p

Looks like it can't get us pass the 0.9 afterall, which is what i wanted to comfirm in my previous statement. :( But as long as it hold the boost more stable, its worth it....especially when you consider the price for a MBC.

My BOV the same as steves will make noise at 10" of meurcury (in a vacume still, but more pressure than compete vacume)

I think i have it set a 2 turns soft from full hard stop.

hrmm thats weird it shouldnt open in vacuum?

Macca

well yes and no.

The tention on the spring is enough pressure to close the valve with a vacume aplied to the diaphram side from the intake mani, and the vacume on the actual valve piston will help to suck it down.

But when you start to pressurise the manifold above the idle vacume, you will get a pressure on the valve face, and a pressure on the diaphram, thus keeping it closed.

When you close the throttle body, you have say 13 psi acting agenst the spring, then you gat a vacume on the diaphram thus opening the valve, then the pressure is vented, the valve spring will force the piston down in the bov, closing it.

yeah but the situation you just described occurs when youve got boost (positive pressure) and the throttle body closes. That's the normal operation of a BOV - vent built up pressure when the butterfly valve slams shut. When you're not boosting the turbo basically isnt spinning fast enough to create pressure and cannot force the spring/bov open. The vacuum on the side with the small vacuum hose isn't enough to suck the valve open.

so with the boost controller u took the hose of from the wastgate and where the hose comes down from the duel boost solinoid and re routed it to the boost controller?

Steve-B
07-01-2008, 09:14 AM
hey hendo, yep thats what i did. I routed the wastegate to the boost controller that back to the turbo and capped off the solenoid ends that arnt used anymore.

Hi Steve,

Looking into the engine bay, I see the 2 hoses connected to the boost solenoid. One from the wastegate, the other from the intake side of the turbo (which does not look like it carries boost).

Can I ask from where did you tap boost to connect to the MBC?

My MBC should be arriving soon... :)

hendo
03-02-2008, 09:10 AM
down by the hot side of the turbo there is a hose to a tee then the tee to the waste gate and to the bleed valve(solinoid) the large line on the solinoid is the 1 that runs boost. the guys in europe run the MBC between the wastegate and the STD bleed valve this is what i will be trying soon. there by changing the amount of pressure the solinoid is seeing so it ups the pressure to match

Steve-B
03-02-2008, 09:31 AM
yep, turbo housing -> MBC -> wastegate. Dead simple when you take the underbody shield off, everything is right there and easy to get to..

hendo
03-02-2008, 05:57 PM
i just did what the guys in europe do with a manual boost controler in the line to the solinoid and it works a treat i had it hit 18psi but turnde it down to 14.2psi

Steve-B
03-02-2008, 09:43 PM
i just wanted a small boost increase, the fuel maps would be too erratic without a proper tune running very high boost.

1MinuteMan
03-02-2008, 09:54 PM
Thanks for the replies guys.

Don't quite understand the advantage of going through both the MBC and solenoid though...

Steve-B
04-02-2008, 08:27 AM
so hendo your saying, that if you go throu the turbo -> MBC -> solenoid -> wastegate you can run what boost ? ( in bar please )

1MinuteMan
04-02-2008, 01:04 PM
And does this mbc-solenoid combo hold constant boost up the revs?

Steve-B
04-02-2008, 01:28 PM
& at the end of the day the solenoid is still controller by the ecu...so it would be erractic @ best. With just the mbc, i have found that the results were instant and very enjoyable, if it works with the solenoid inline, and you like it, all props to you mate, as ive only tried it the standard way.

hendo
04-02-2008, 03:40 PM
the whole idea of doing it this way is so i follows the standard boost curve just instead of hiting 11psi it will hit what you set it to like mine 14psi or 1bar. in the book 21st centurey performance thy describe it in better detail, they did it on a GTR

Steve-B
05-02-2008, 08:12 AM
ive read the book mate. so you are running 1bar all the time with no issues ?

hendo
05-02-2008, 08:36 AM
yeah well it still has all the engine protection stuff like retarding the boos up high and boost limmited in the lower gears

hendo
05-02-2008, 08:37 AM
for the guys that are interested i have posted the link to autospeed in my thread the same guys that did 21st centurey performance

I'm thinking about doing the rear lights and polishing the spray afterwards to give it a glossy look like your lights

vht nightshades, check back after pages, i tryed tinting my rear tails with tint, looked 50/50. yeah i take them off @ night, they are really easy to take on and off. yes they are a defectable item, but so is a atmo bov and having gauges on the dash. i can live with it.

got these in the mail today, half of my brake upgrade. disc's / calipers and pads from an VR4 galant.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/devilrolla12345/IMG_0399.jpg

( calipers were sent separately )

The idea / upgrade will consist of:

VR4 calipers ( will be rebuilt with a seal kit and painted ) $250
DBA slotted disc's $200 i think
Bendix Ultimate pads $80 for fronts
Steel braided lines, from RPW hopefully $110
Motul Brake fluid $dunno

Yes the standard rcolt brakes are good, but im a modifier, so if i know i can upgrade parts of the car i think are lacking, then i will.
