View Full Version : handbrake adjust
can one of the guys with a workshop manual help out with how to adjust the handbrake?
mine is loose and cant get much bite... need to have a look at adjusting it
also, bit of info on how it works...
how do they work on the colt? i know VT commodores with rear discs use a set of brake shoes inside a small diameter drum built into the rotor... but i dont see room for the commodore type set up so assume the cable manually presses the calipers somehow? i need to improve the bite of it for some tail out action.

Easy as
Handbrake is cable operated, and moves the rear brake piston its self.
there is a nut, you tighen it to tighten the cable
can be accessed by lifting the flap on the handbrake, not easy but can be done I did it this way last time

chock wheels and lower handbrake to do it.

dont adjust the wire if u dont try this first. ull snap the wire.. i have before when working at toyota.
foot on brake pump pedal.
hold brake down hard.
yank HB till pedal feels different and repeat.
try it it works.
adjusting the cable only picks up the slack from stretched cables.
lol ours is caliper hand brake not drum....
as my post said, i didnt think this would be the case, the commodore rear rotors are monstrous units and ours are minature in comparison
Thanks macca and Mark... I'll have a play on the weekend

from factory cable is slack... thats why i adjusted mine to one click :) i want to make it alittle more tighter...
to get the surround out unscrew the gearknob and take out i the bolts 2 under the front cup holders one in the rear cup holder and the plastic under the handbrake handle pops out then just take out i think 2 screws there and the surround comes out just dont over tighten the bolt or your brakes will be always on...

yeh I removed the console once to do it, till i found that, its not a flange, you just flex the handbrake boot out of the way, nots not the easest but can be done.
