View Full Version : Using ATMO and Recirc bov at the same time?

Well, this morning i fell over and hit my head and came up with an idea, thought i would pass it through here and get your thoughts. :D
Dual port bov are bloody expensive so i thought of something different. what if you could install a full atmo bov as well as the standard recirc valve, then potentially you would have a dual port valve? would this actually work? if you run the atmo valve inline with the recirc then both valves should operate and release pressure with some venting back into the system through the recirc valve and some venting to the atmosphere from the full atmo to get the sound.
could this eliminate the potential richness between gear changes that the ecu does not like? hence like a dual port valve.
Any comments/suggestions (except flaming ones...) would be great.;)

I don't see why not... Just make an adapter up int the factory intercooler piping and put the atmo one in there

its all for noise :p
yeh ive seen it done on many nissans instead of taking out there standard bov then just weld a atmo on... main reason is that some skylines will stall with atmo bovs... but yeh shud work no probs :)

I did that with my 180sx, still had the stock unit on and ran a blitz BOV with no issues, but tried to run both units to atmosphere and it ran like a pig, so it may work.

Thanks for your help guys. fountain of knowledge on this site is great.:) just completed the install and the car idles fine. just have to take it for a run to see if it vents to atmo without throwing cel. time will tell.
thanks again guys.:D

tried tuning it yesterday. won't go. holds boost etc no probs there, but the atmo will not vent. do you guys think i need to reduce the amount of vaccum to the recirc line so it increases the vac on the atmo line to get it to vent?
any ideas/info would be great.:)

maybe the standard bov is already releasing most of the pressure so the atmo doesnt have any left to make a big sound... or loosen the atmo to the softest setting other then that you could try a different vaccum line maybe tapping off the same line wont work???

No, the issue is that the dual port BOV's dont vent at the same time!
The turbosmart one is built so the two ports compared to the piston open at different times
So on the turbosmart one, as the piston moves up the recirc port becomes open first, then as it moves up some more, the atmo piston will move.
With yours, they are trying to vent at the same time, but spring pressures are different so they wont really go at the same time. i would say that the recirc is venting all the pressure and thus there is not enough pressure to force the piston up on the atmo the vac line doesnt move the piston, the pressure behind it does, the vac line just alters the spring pressure.

install a megaphone in the car
where you've got a handheld microphone & a speaker under the bonnet so you can go 'psssssssssssssssh' yourself.. it'll have the same effect :)

the older GTRs used twin BOV setup. but its only to move the mass flow of air. with the colt ur developing such a small amount of air that a MR bov will do. but if its for noise. just get a legal TS dual port or something.

Just an experiment guys.... if it worked great, if not, that's ok too.
