Where is your preferred place for mounting a GPS on an Rcolt, assuming you don't want a permanent in-dash solution:
- front windscreen next to the mirror;
- front side window next to driver;
- on top of dashboard (and if so how);
- somewhere else?

I put mine right under the mirror in the middle of our windscreen. This way, it wouldn't block my left/right vision.

My pet-hate is seeing a gps right in the middle of the windscreen... I have my tomtom at the top right of the windscreen with the power cord hidden down the a-pillar. Close enough to operate with the right hand without leaning over and out of the eyeline while driving...
I'll post a youtube vid later showing how to hide the cord...

Different point of view i guess, Tony.
For me, i would rather not having to lift my eyesight off the road to see where the GPS's pointing me to, nor would i like to do changes to it when i'm driving.
Another reason for me to have it in the middle, is my missus can read it at the same time and do any changes for me

I make use of that little window in front of the side mirror. Perfect place to put it. I have the cable going under the dash and out of a space near the pillar. Its nice and out of the way, still reachable enough and you still have the road in your vision if you need to check where its sending you.

Getting a click on holder for the iPhone so it will be next to the cd played.

I put another cigarette lighter plug behind the steering-wheel-under-tray for the GPS.
It won't matter if I sell the car later because people will still use it for ipods/gps/mobile phones/pdas or whatever. Cost all of $20 I think, and the cables are zip-tied to the piece of metal behind the plastic cover that pops off. Looks tidy, easy to hide if you need to & no cables (i fucken hate cables all over the place!)

Thanks for calling others that put it in the middle as a dick, which includes myself :rolleyes:

I read a street directory before I head out so I know where I am going ahead of time!
I find it contradictory that authorities can allow people to have a navigation unit in direct line of sight of the road, or even if it is mounted out of the way as a distraction in city driving. I am especially annoyed that the authorities pick on modified cars from having gauges etc up on the dash, yet allow a distracting TV screen to be planted in front of the driver. Just my opinion I guess - call me old fashioned!:p

I hardly ever use it. On the QLD trip it was invaluable and 100% accurate.
IMHO, the tiny GPS replacing several street directories is not only practical, but the maps can be updated, it covers the whole of Aus and if you're lucky like me, have europe and nth america. That means holiday time you simply know where to go...
I have a bad memory, and the days before GPS I would read the street directory, but if there were more than a few turns from where I know, I was stuffed and had to pull over many times...
As for my pet-hate about the GPS's in the middle of the screen? I hate dirt or bug guts in my filed of view. If I drive off and there's some bird poo or other dirt that won't budge with the wipers, I'll pull over and get it off. I love a clean view... Plus, I don't have go-go-gadget arms, you'd need 4 foot long arms to operate it in the middle of the screen. I like being able to use it on the go...
Mind my swine flu voice...
Thanks fauxpas for the all your efforts with the youtube videos :)
Lucky you have a windscreen sticker to hide the GPS holder, that's good thinking.
I place my 4.3" GPS on the side window as well, but it's a cheapie OEM unit that I have trouble updating from 2007 (igo Map), plus the power cable is 1m in length which is not long enough to feed the cabling under the dash, and it crashes every so often - so I might replace it with a proper one next year.

Here's an answer .......
I have our GPS mounted on a saw-off aluminum cycling water bottle ( the under side ) sitting in the passengers drink/cup holder...... bottle bum protrudes about 25mm above holder.
Great spot for it .... For me

Here's what Ive done, genuine tomtom dashboard mount disk trimmed down 1cm all around and stuck on to drivers side air vent, just a matter of placing ya easy port suction thingo on when you need gps.

What I've done with my GPS is mount it on the inside of my rear windscreen, and then I've put a mirror on the outside of the rear windscreen to reflect the image back to me, and then I just look in my rear view to see it, and it's completely out of the way. COMPLETELY!
Though a negative of this is that I have to use a 12 inch GPS screen to make sure it's big enough for the distance.
Works well though.

I tried to use that too, but couldn't get the disk to stick... might have to try again or something...

I wonder whether the 06 sunglass holder would be a good spot (would it get a signal there?), when not in use, just flip it back out of the way away from prying eyes Wire it up to the map light power source!

okay, will get photos up soon. The BEST part of this set up is if someone is following you to the exact place you're going they can just look at the back of your car for directions.
I've also got a massive roof mounted PA system, like an ice-cream van, or a politician promotion van, for the voice saying, "at the next exit turn right." It's really loud and I get a lot of complaints all the time.

Uh-huh, taking the piss!:) Why not mount it on the bonnet like the rotaries mount their chrome gauges!
