View Full Version : Track Day set up
just wanted to see if any of you guys ran different types of brake pads, fluids or did anything else to get it ready for the track
doing one on the 13th of next month

I have a harness I clip in
I remove all loose crap and everything from the boot
Change the tyre pressures
Thats all i do.
5000km oil changes i dont worry about doing it before or after the track
Gearbox oil is sheduled every 100,000 i think, I do it more cause of trackwork.

Drive to track.
Take loose shit out.
Drive around track.
Put loose shit back in.
Drive home with 25% less tread.
I just ran stock pressure, qr recommended that for a first timer that you dont go dropping it.
i forgot to take one or two loose things out, fun when stuff flys around out of nowhere!
i checked tyre pressures just before i got there, was running 35psi..
i didnt even take out the sparetyre/jack/tools etc
ok well sounds like im sorted already figured i should take jack and spare out

strip it :) no rear seats no passenger no interior plastics remove passenger head light re-direct air to podfilter, swap to 999 project mu pads :L , RE55s tyres all round on 34psi, swap to coilovers for the day, drop the cat back of the exhaust off (less weight n more flow)... at the end revert back to standard...
seriously though, check all fluids and take out everything that is not needed run with out ASC, and make sure A/C is off !! and a nice race harness works nicely standard parts and all should be fine but just watch your temps (turn on the heater if the water temp raises) and maybe good to service before if its due soon...

For me, i just need to check all fluid's at the right level. And bring a tyre pressure gauge on the day to monitor and adjust pressure accordingly.
If you don't have any form of temp gauges (the ones on our dash are useless), do 1-2 cool down lap every 3-5 laps to ensure your water/oil temp. This also helps your brakes from cooking.
Personally, i will do engine/gearbox oil & brake fluid after each track day i attend, hence i normally go near my service interval.

i used to drop tyre pressures to like 25psi all around, then a mate suggested trying 35 front and 38 rear, did that and it was much better!
tires at 34 front 37 rear
switch to atmo BOV
remove rear seat, jack, spare and everything loose from glove box etc
put on the tow hook

put on the tow hook
yep dont forget to install the tow hook.
opps i forgot to do that on sunday :p
yep dont forget to install the tow hook.
;)
dont want the tow truck to be hooking onto your lower control arm or ripping off your bumper to drag you out of the sand traps

Why the switch to atmo bov? Is there any benefit?
Why the switch to atmo bov? Is there any benefit?
i am sceptical of the standard plastic one holding anything more than stock boost
not since i can easily push the spring with my thumb
i run the atmo most of the time on the street anyways these days but the cops here are fiends for giving you a yellow sticker for atmos (also hot on pods and tint in WA)
i really need to get a MR recirc valve but i just have been lazy with the car for a long time now. i enjoy driving it but am hating spending money on it because i'll go stupid and end up having to pay for a divorce lol

Ok fair enough.
I dont know how much the pressure from the vacuum line from the intake manifold contributes to the ability of the spring to keep it close though.

i think you'll find hes talking about the actual intercooler pipe running more pressure then the plastic bov can take... many evo's have that problem...

Hey are you up for a run around QR in the near future?
There are sprints next wednesday then the following saturday.
Im thinking I will be out there, just ordering a new set of ad07's so going to finish off the old ones.

running higher pressure at the rear than at the front? I thaught it was the other way around for circuit, dont you want to reduce understeer or have i got myself mixed up or is it more to compensate for the increased heat on the front tyres which will after running for a while even them out?

sounds like you are wrong way about
lower pressure = more grip

ower pressure isnt about more grip.
its all about the ability for the sidewalls to flex, IMO
Higher at the rear will mean they will flex less, and be more prone to side slip which will counter understeer.
less at the front means the sidewall will absorbe some sideslip in sidewall flex.
also when they are lower pressure, they squch flat more and provide more surface area on the tarmac
also they will rise about 10psu with heat in them
but as i said i found running 35 and 37 38 was better than in the 25's

Actually, what the tyre pressure really do, is to change/adjust the amount of tyre that get in touch with the ground. Tyre wall is mainly depended by the material/design of the tyre itself.

Ok i did some googling and it would seem to back up what you guys said about pressures.
Im running 38 front 36 rear acording to BP's air thing. I guess ill try 35 front 37 rear as sugested then next time im checking the tyres and see how it feels.

yes, i was just over simplifying it
the science behind it is irrelevant, at the end of the day the higher pressure situation means less grip because a harder tyre will slip/skip on the tarmac. alternatively less pressure absorbs and distributes the small bumps/allows more flex, creating more heat and grip etc, thus less pressure can equal more grip (at the pressures we are talking) :)

do yourself a favour and buy a proper pressure gauge... you can get half decent digital ones for about $20-$30
the ones on the hoses at servos can be really inaccurate

servo electronic ones are very dodgie, i had a tyre pumped to 38 once, IRL it was about 50psi.
imo anything in the 20's was just too low for me.

im going to run 34 or 36psi all round most likely when i go track with my suspension setup i dont think i need more oversteering...

Yeah i know servo guages are dodgey, im still in the process of trying to find a half decent one to use. If anyone has any suggestions? :)

Go see your local kart dealer with $100-150 in hand, you will return with a nice one.
I had a good kart one, was about 10cm diameter face on it. Sold it off when I got rid of all my gear though, was just thinking today I should have kept it.
No worries filo, I will probably still go next week before uni gets too busy again.
