damn, had the car for a week and already screwin it up, accidentally put it in reverse while shifting from second to fourth (i know its stupid and shouldnt do it but was excited by the boost coming in at 2nd >.>) . doing about 50ks and made a grinding noise. now im all paranoid. should i get it checked out? ive read new cars have a mechanism to stop this but it seems the colt doesnt need to push down the shifter or anything to engage reverse, it seems super easy. arrrggggg...

everyone has grinded their gear box once or twice in their life.

If your talking about shifting into reverse when parking what you need to do is shift into 3rd and then shift into reverse. All FF Cars are like that. Dont force into reverse.

As for driving and grinding the gears, man gearbox's are made stronge for a reason :p a little grind isnt gonna hurt it lol~

i hope they are made strong cause like i said i was doing around 50-55ks when i put it in reverse but only for half a second. i know it wouldnt do much damage whilst engaging from reverse to gear while still in motion and makes a small grind but i was travelling fairly fast :P and it its so easy to shift into reverse unlike other manuals ive driven before(a long time ago).

Ouchhhh........ how is the gearbox feeling now?? Is it still shifting normal?? If its still normal, then consider yourself lucky and take extra care in future. Busted gearbox ain't cheap ;)

dw its a getrag.

That's optimistic of you :) 50-60kmph ain't a slow speed, nor is it a little grind to the gearbox (getrag or not).

I wouldn't worry too much. Mitsu are generous when it comes to giving out free gearboxes

As long as it was only a little grind and there was no crack noise(like my case were I smashed the synchro in second) you should be fine

You could have crunched it going into 4th mate .. I don't think it is that easy to shift from 2nd to reverse !!

Its nothing Ryan lol.

Its just a grind. He didnt engage it into reverse. If he did the car wouldnt be drivable and its impossible to put a car into reverse at that speed.

Hes just nudged the gear heard it grind and thats it. Man people driving manual on their L's grind the crap outa shit gearbox's and they still drive normal. Not being optimistic here but its a Getrag. A little "grind" wont even dent the thing.

update, so i went for a drive around, everything seems fine until i got home, put it in neutral. theres seems to be weird noise coming from under the car like small bits of marble swishing around. man i hope its not shaved metal from the gearbox.

i dont think i crunched 4th due to the fact that its seems very easy going into reverse. gonna get it looked at tomorrow, man i hope its nothing.

relax, that noise is your clutch and (unfortunately) it's normal.

you crunched it into 4th, trust me. just leave it at that !

Dude your worrying to much man

ITS OK!

Your gearbox IS fine.

Dont need to get it checked. You just chruched a gear while shifting. Happens to ever one. I've done it a few already. Nothing is wrong.

Oh! I'm under the impression that he did engaged reverse. If yes, then its not small thing. But if he only tried to engage but didn't really entered reverse mode, then yes its nothing.

yeah it was pretty stupid, just that i havent driven manual in a long time and re-learning it (im actually one of those L platers :P) and being a poor uni student if anything significant was to happen to the car ill have trouble financially :( hence why i didnt go for skylines or wrxs or anything that was more than 5 years old.

but ill need to pop by the dealer anyway, he owes me some floor mats  and a small scratch which should be covered by paint protection warranty.

thanks for everyones help, ive now calmed down but still have it hanging in my head :o.

Biggest waste of money ever IMO

yeah it is, but it got thrown in with all this other stuff so why not :P

Macca: yeah i noticed, everytime i speed up it just makes all these noises, im still worried though. and its so noticeably loud in neutral with the clutch out. sounds like i got a washing machine with a lot of little pieces of metal inside.

edit: would that noise im talking about be related to this thread? http://www.rcolt.com/showthread.php?t=170 mentioned by lovecolt and raymond6.

Actually i had a very similar situation. I was driving on freeway, doing around 110~120km/h on "top gear", I was daydreaming and feeling the exhaust sound is abit too loud, so i tried to shift to the next gear which is the reverse gear. I didnt engage the gear, i was softly trying to shift it. I only hear a very soft gear grinding noise. The gearbox is fine.
Straight and long freeway is everywhere in WA. Especially i got to drive all the way up north to get to uni. :S

Aaah, nothing like changing into the colt's 6th gear (reverse), sometimes makes you wish we had a 6th gear for eating up highway kms.

lol ok ill take your word for it. i think ive almost gotten over it now since reading up a bit more about manual transmission mechanics. just hope im not stupid enough to do it again

Lol. Yeah, chill dude. The noises are normal. Im a bit the same with mine, noises concern me. Im a Subaru boy, so im yet to learn whats normal with the Colts. I just have faith that if anything breaks, ive got warranty to cover it :D

leonx---
17-03-2009, 08:07 PM
just that i was concerned if it broke ill have to pay for it since it was not the fault of the manufacturer :/ but judging by what people say it seems mitsu will cover mostly anything apart from mods.
