Hi there Hendo,
how did your exhaust end out, did you notice any resonable gain in power (any dyno results) and how loud is it? Is it very drony (likely to attract too much attention?), or is it similar note to the original?:) what did you pay for it?
hendo
10-09-2007, 06:14 PM
sounds nice no drone and not to loud. price was 900 or 950 but thats cause it was stainless. power not that much better but thats cause to realy see any differance you need to get the restrictive dump pipe out. i dont have any results yet as i didnt get to do a run the other day but when i get a day off i will go down and get a power run done. but i put on i pipe the other day that takes out that second pipe and also fitted the filter and it makes it alot better i think

This is why Ralliart come up with a front / rear underbody cover for protecting your car if you ever rally it. ;)
For wakefield open day, pretty much everyday's a open day over there unless its pre-booked for the day.

mate, whats the lowest intake temps can you get with the air intake, my concern is that the intake you are using is plastic, and the water temp in tha radiator pipe sometimes gets up to 83degrees and the intercooler pipe gets quite how as well. With it picking up Just from the bottom you will also get alot of dirt and air born bugs etc, prob should get them to check your filter each service as well. Other than that man the cars looking really sick...good job !
Macca
04-01-2008, 08:29 PM
nice knob ;)
I was going to get that one, but i went for the piano black one cause it was alot heavier.
Intake also looks the goods too
lovecolt
04-01-2008, 08:51 PM
i don't think the radiator intercooler pipe's temp is of much concern to the intake. The way i see it, is that the speed of air going through the intake pipes, should be much quicker than the radiated intake pipe.
hendo
04-01-2008, 09:24 PM
the temps are not as good in the heat of the day due to the road being so hot but the hottest i have seen it was 46 and that was on a 40+ degree day after sitting in the sun but at night or after it has rained wow thats all i can say. but i will be making a new scoop soon that picks up the ari a bit better
Steve-B
05-01-2008, 09:37 AM
lovecolt ur post makes no sense. Of course the intercooler and radiator pipe make a difference. Go for a drive and when the car is hot stop and jump out and try and hold ur hand on the radiator pipe without it burning, and the intercooler holds alot of heat. Now if your intake pipe is made of plastic or any material that doesnt withstand heat, then it is going to heat up when the engine does and then it defeats the point of changing it. The radiator pipe like i said gets up to 83 degrees sometimes, so i suggest either heat taping the rad pipes, or maybe a heat shield for the intake pipe. I have seen these pipes at auto-one, and to me it looked like they were thin plastic. That was my thoughts on it.
lovecolt
05-01-2008, 10:16 AM
I think you don't understand what i'm saying, Intercooler and radiator pipe's heat will radiate and indirectly heat up the intake pipe. With open spaces and min contact area, the intake pipe will not heat up to be as hot as those pipes. Then, you have to think how quick the heated intake pipe will heat up air when its in it. If the air is still, obviously it will get heat up rather quick. But if you have a massive amount of air coming through from the front, the heated intake pipe will not be able to heat it significantly anytime before the air actually entered the air filter. In fact, the amount of cold air coming in, will cool down the intake pipe that heated indirectly by other things.
Whether if the plastic of the intake piping used will long, its another question.
Steve-B
05-01-2008, 10:43 AM
hmm, well all i can say is what i have seen and tested myself. Before the water temp reaches it max of 80 degrees the air temps can get as low as 18degrees at night. But when the water temp reaches 80degrees the air temp will not go below 23degrees, BECAUSE the radiator pipes heat is very hot. When you hit to go pedal and the turbo is sucking and spooling, yes the air temp goes down by 1 or 2degrees But its the rad and intercooler pipe that bring the temp back up. So yes you are right when the car is stationary, but what i am saying is, that having the pipe there where hendo has situated it, in the middle of heat central it will attach more heat, if the material of the pipe doesnt stop heat coming through more, it wont be as efficent and his driving temps could be even higher that my 23-25degrees because of its location and its material used. IMO

well i fitted the boost controller and it now boosts to 14psi and spikes at 14.9psi with no engine light (yet) i will do a wright up for you guys so stay tuned to this thread
hendo
21-01-2008, 09:48 AM
Ok to start of with I will not be held responsible for any damage done to your car after the installation. And I have not gone into limp mode yet but I will not say that it will or will not happen
the install is very straight forward start of by removing the standard hose on the boost solenoid then run the hose from the solenoid to the input of the aftermarket solenoid then run the output of the aftermarket solenoid to the brass nipple that goes down to the waste gate, then that’s the first part done:)
Next you have to T into the line that goes to the (FPR) fuel pressure regulator. T into the hose that goes to the FPR solenoid it has some spiral plastic around it. The t you have just put in will run to the gizzmo IBC in the cabin. Now just run the hose and the wiring from the aftermarket boost solenoid through the hole in the firewall. From hear it’s easy as. Connect the red wire from the IBC to the blue wire on the back of the cigarette lighter then the black wire of the ibc to the chassis. Then connect the hose from the FPR to the back of the IBC and you are done. Just follow the start up info in the book and you are all good. I set mine to 14psi and a gain of 2% it now spikes at about 14.3psi if you set it to 3% it will almost hit 15psi. Hope this helps people out.
Macca
21-01-2008, 10:27 AM
not bad hendo, make sure you have clamps on all the pipes too.
hows the boost hold, does it still drop?

well done hendo - looking forward to getting a debrief.
hendo
21-01-2008, 01:56 PM
i tried swapping the hoses around cause the computer started dropping the boost to like 6psi and you wouldnt beleave it, the power i got was crazy but thhen after about 20mins the computer started going NAUGHTY NAUGHTY and put on the fuel cut on at 4000rpm. and than i thought hang on the standard system is a bleed system. so i did it all wrong so i will muck around a bit later
hendo
04-02-2008, 05:43 PM
ok i fitted a manual boost controller instead just using the gizzmo as a gauge now which is good cause it shows what it spikes at and i think it has a 12volt output for water spray.
here is a link that show what i did but i used a GFB boost controller

ok i have started building my bracing here is a shot of how the rear strut bar is attached it will get painted once i have finished the rest of it cause it will be turned into a k brace. but as it is the car seems to not squat as much when takin of and also more responsive
27AME
09-02-2008, 10:26 PM
Wonder what your A/F Ratio's were like running 14psi? I remember when I took the wastegate actuator line off and free boosted the car, I could tell it was running extremely lean. But if you say it had good power with that then I guess once someone puts some serious time into tuning the car we may see some really positive results..

15-02-2008, 08:14 AM
read my copy of 21st performance last night hendo, and unless our solenoid is a closed loop, there is no reason to run the MBC parralel to the solenoid. It states " if you want the boost curve to be similar " " but with a higher boost level at higher rpm " thus the ecu still controls the boost and you only gain a higher amount in higher rpm. By removing the solenoid in my case, the boost comes on earlier, stronger and has a far faster response that stock. Maybe have a re-read over it again.
hendo
15-02-2008, 09:12 AM
i will have a read again but I was sure they did that for open loop cars, but any how im happy with what I have done. What’s the max boost you can put on before the CEL? the main reason I like it like this is due to the engine protection is still in place, it may not feel as strong as doing it your way but it gives me peace of mind and its the way the guys do it in Europe if im not mistaken
any chance of making some more rear strut braces for forums members?
paid of course...
Steve-B
15-02-2008, 12:06 PM
.9 bar i hit boost cut, .82bar is fine.
Trickster
15-02-2008, 03:47 PM
I agree with SteveB the car is lots more responsive with a MBC and the solenoid out of the loop.
BTW SteveB when you say boost cut, is that when the CEL comes on?
1MinuteMan
16-02-2008, 02:29 AM
Me too. The car is much more responsive at the low end after installing the MBC and bypassing the solenoid. And this without having to raise the peak boost level. I'm still running 0.8 bar. The wonders of eliminating wastegate creep...
Actually, I don't quite understand how the original boost control design works. With the T-piece connecting boost to both the wastegate and solenoid at the same time, wouldn't the wastegate always see boost and be partially open? And how does the solenoid control the wastegate?
hendo
16-02-2008, 10:48 AM
its a bleed system..i may have to try it with the electronic controller but any how at the moment i will be fixing my car (hit a fox last night) how do i take of the front bumper? as for strut braces i will be making the very soon just looking into a few differant ideas
Macca
16-02-2008, 10:56 AM
front bar mate, take the plasic from underneith off, then on the side there is 2 screws, one right on the bumper join and one lower, take the plates off, there is 2 bolts behind that, pop the bonnet, and thake the 4 clips of the top of the grill.
the sides of the buper at the flairs clips in, so pull them out, there is 2 small alignment pins at the bottom of the upper grill so lift there and pull back enough to unplug fog lights, then pull all off.

ok an update just moved the battery to the boot now and it makes a big differance to the ballance of the car, feels much better
why_bother
20-04-2008, 08:15 PM
Did you end up making a false floor to bolt the battery onto? After I did the fibreglass mould of the boot I wouldn't trust that thin flimsy shit holding the carpet down. Not with the weight of a lead acid battery (and I assume you don't drive like a grandpa). That shit will rip into pieces, I think it's just masonite.
Bunnings sell pieces of 6mm MDF that will cover the boot no problems for about $8, and it'd be very very easy to throw some carpet (even the factory stuff if you wanted to) over the top. Got any photos of the battery box etc?

So far the tien have been good but i have only just started to drive with them on as i have been at autosalon all weekend, they seem to be getting firmer as i go, the comfort level is gr8 not harsh at all but i am thinking i will get some custom springs made up as i dont think they will be good for track. the ones i have are aus spec so its all god if they fail. realy if you have any questions just ask. I will let you guys know how they are in a week or so also.
Also a shot of my power run from autosalon and i will also get some shots up of the girls for you lads soon.

So you pulled 110fwkW or what?
Very interested in how the tein's go man, although I definitely think I would go for some higher spring rates than what tein offer. The BC Coilovers that Pro-Speed automotive (site sponsor) sells seem to have the spring rates spot on. Let me know if you upgrade the springs to higher rates.
I'm definitely guessing you're the same as me and won't bat an eyelid to a stiffer ride for the performance gains it will serve.

Yeah, Matt's colt produced less boost after fitting the intercooler, but still made a fair bit more power as a result of removing the restrictions. Maybe thats why he managed to get away running the standard ECU despite the significantly higher power output??:)

hendo
21-11-2008, 08:22 PM
it is running lower boost than before, it was running ruf when you started it with the pod so i mved it back to the other air box, and that fixed that part, then when i am going along it will be finr then it slowly losses boost till it only boosts to 5psi then after a little bit it goes into limp with P1235.

Code No. P1235: Trustful Check Air Flow Sensor
FUNCTION
• Compare the actual measurement of volumetric
efficiency by an air flow sensor signal with volu-
metric efficiency estimated from a throttle position
sensor (main or sub) signal.
TROUBLE JUDGMENT
Check Conditions
• While engine is running.
• The throttle position sensor (main or sub) is nor-
mal.
• The air flow sensor is normal.
Judgment Criteria
• The difference between volumetric efficiency esti-
mated from the throttle position sensor (main)
and volumetric efficiency estimated from the
throttle position sensor (sub) exceeds the speci-
fied value.
• The difference between volumetric efficiency
(actual measurement) by the air flow sensor and
volumetric efficiency estimated from the throttle
position sensor (main) exceeds the specified
value.
• The difference between volumetric efficiency
(actual measurement) by the air flow sensor and
volumetric efficiency estimated from the throttle
position sensor (sub) exceeds the specified
value.
PROBABLE CAUSES
• Failed air flow sensor
• Damage in air flow sensor circuit or loose con-
nector contact
• Failed intake air system
• Failed engine-ECU
IMO
Re-check all your cooler connections and commections before the turbo to make sure no air is getting in or out.
Also check what the MAF sensor is mounted to.
then check all the turbo wastegate lines.
also if youhave upped the boost stick it back to normal solinoid.
If you wanna know what was causing it do it one at a time.

Look forward to seeing some pics, so the boost stays at a consistent 16-16psi without any drop off at higher revs? Maybe the inlet is a big restriction, I've also heard of rubber inlet pipes (ie S14 200sx), contracting/collapsing under full boost, limiting power and causing all sorts of issues, I wonder if that is relevant to our cars?:)

hendo, after your experiences in the rcolt, you going to get another? Or onto another car?
Also, using the top gear euro saftey bs-metre, after the roll, can you still open/close the door normally?
And if you paint the car green you could tell everyone its an Incredible Hulk car!!!
Good to see you didn't hurt yourself.

holy shit dude! im surprised the rcolt held up so well with no rollcage! glad u came out fine outta that... to some degree wish my rcolt kinda ended like that!
all the best mate i know how it feels /sigh
OMG! Good to see the stronger chassis take the roll over (no rollcage?!). Were you on sticky slicks??
So far driving my Rcolt I've not experienced any situation where I thought the car would topple over (screech the tires and understeer around the corner - but not often), and I keep thinking about the infamous A-class rollover video :S and I thought I'd never see a Rcolt do a rollover on tarmac (in rally most likely!)
Glad no-one was injured and no other cars were hurt (gtr!).
Take it easy hey.
