View Full Version : TURBOSMART BLOW OFF VALVE FOR Colt Ver R
Hi all fellow CVR Manual Owners!
Read in a previous thread about this product Turbosmart Blowoff Valve Dual Port for us manual trannies.
Any advise on the function and problems if any of this product ?
How does it compare to a conventional vent to atmosphere BOV ?

Mate it just works as any normal atmospheric blow off valve, but can be plumbed back if thats how you want it... it comes with the adapter plate to make it pulmbed back so all you have to do is take off the supersonic trumpet and whack the plumbback plate on it...
No problems, mine works perfect.

Hi mate, So for you i assume you are running it with the plumback plate on all the time as our ride doesnt allow anything to go to the atmosphere.???
Any difference or will there be any sound or swoosh when it is on plumback mode???
Please advise.

I'm not actually running it with the plumback plate on it mate, fully atmospheric with the supersonic trumpet still on it, have had it this way the whole time...
There probably will be a bit of turbo flutter with the plumback plate on? not sure - doubt there'd be a whoosh though as the air is going back into the system, not venting out.
The bov is easy to work. You twist the top for 'Hardness' or 'Softness'. When it is set on hard (the top is screwed on as tight as it goes) the piston is harder to open - which means less air gets out through the trumpet. When it is set on soft (fully unscrewed to the maximum let out point marked by the red line - mine is set on this at the moment) the piston is easy to push open and therefore more air is vented out.
Basically its all done by a spring, when the spring is compressed into the piston (hard mode) it is harder for the air to push it open, when the spring is at its least compressed (soft) the piston is easy to open and more air comes out.
But I assure you, no problems with this BOV at all, no matter how you decide to run it.

Hi boss,
Guess u r running it full to atmosphere then ?? Are you a Colt Ralliart Version R ?
No CEL , No Power Loss ? Nothing bad happens at all ?
Hmm,
Any other manual CVRs using this BOV ?

Yep Full Atmo, running on Colt Ralliart (I don't understand all that Version R shit)
No CEL or power loss, NO problems. :)
By the way, According to Turbosmart, I am the first person in Australia to use this BOV on the RColt.
Seeming as though Turbosmart is an Australian brand, I'd say I'm the only one in the world ;)

Haha I honestly didn't know that - I thought maybe mine was a Colt Ralliart and the Colt Ralliart Version R was a different release that looked the same.
Either way, who really cares? I don't know why companies make it all so different, anyway which way you look at it, the Ralliart Colt would be more successful in ANY country than these czt, colt plus turbo etc (whatever the hell they are).
Why they bother to make different models and incurr all the extra expenses is beyond me. It should be Colt ES, Colt LS or whatever it is, Colt VR-X and Colt Ralliart. This should be consistent WORLDWIDE. Just my opinion.

Hmm in this lovely island we call Singapore, there are automatics running around.
Well, How loud would you think your Turbosmart BOV is ?
Lets say compared to a sharp sound of a HKS SSQV BOV ?

Or you can call Singapore a "FINE" country :D
Singapore only brings in CVT version officially. Those manual RColt guys in Singapore went through parallel import method.
Australia is opposite by only having manual version and we can't do parallel import.
Jap (motherland of RColt) naturally has both version readily in the showroom.

it's fully adjustable isn't it, so u can adjust the loudness? and if u wanna make it quiet u can???

OK
you dont need anything else to fit it, unless the stock vacume hose is too short, but i beleve its fine. ( if not grab some vacume hose (3mm i think) from auto one, its about $3/m)
its sticks in identical to the standard bypass valve.
the ONLY adjustable bit, is the spring pressure, which needs to be set correctly, it determins how quick the valve closes after pressure is released, having it too soft or hard can cause some stalling, i think some members have posted how hard to set it earlyer in this thred.
the VOLUME is NOT adjustable!!! Only the GFB Stealth FX or deceptor pro can do this, but apparently we cant take it past 50:50 atomophere/recirc due to the check engine light so the extra few hundrard $$ isnt worth it.

after driving with the bov back on it feels the same lol...
just wondering which way do you turn ther bov cap? e.g to make sure its 50:50.
Is it possible to release the boosted air out at a higher rpm via adjustment?
Instead of having the bov go off at 2000rpm :)
Macca
27-11-2007, 11:31 PM
if its a turbosmart dual port, the knob on the front doesnt adjust the ratio if bipassed air.
the knob on the top adjusts the spring tention on the valve which opens and closes as it lets out air. more pressure on the spring the quicker it will close, it should be set at a certin point for best results.
go to the turbosmart website and download the installation manual for the dual port bov on how to set it correctly.
(you will need a 2nd person in the colt to do it)

NEVER EVER EVER EVER buy shit from Autobarn.
example: HKS Super SQV is $280 (converted) in Japan. YOu bring it out here, they put a 100% markup on the shipping and the product.
Just for shits and giggles I asked them to quote me for how much a Trust TD04 turbo was going to be. They quoted me 3,300 dollars.

can anyone pls post some photos from diff angles to give me an idea of how this is fitted?

hi all,
In my opinion i *think* all dual port BOVs should work. At the moment im trying to find the cheapest option and i just found some more Turbosmart ones that may fit and only cost $320 delivered.
http://www.autospeed.com/shop/category_624/browse.html
The cheap compact turbosmart ones should work because theyre meant to be used as replacements for the stock bosch plastic ones (not sure if bosch make our colt ones).
I'm gonna try search for a cheapo Monza or Autotechnica branded dual port bov as i'm fairly confident if one exists then it should work without any engine light probs.
edit: Does anyone know the inlet and outlet sizes of the stock bov?
edit 2: Another option is this Go Fast Bits 'Hybrid' BOV http://www.alldayperformance.com.au/prod11.htm $300, or $280 posted from ebay http://cgi.ebay.com.au/GFB-GOFASTBITS-HYBRID-BLOW-OFF-VALVE-TURBO-BOOST-BOV_W0QQitemZ290170993825QQihZ019QQcategoryZ72478Q QrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem
edit 3: Cheapo generic 'hybrid' dual port BOV from ebay $105 posted http://cgi.ebay.com.au/FLYING-ADJUS-TURBO-HYBRID-BLOW-OFF-VALVE-BOOST-DUMP-BOV_W0QQitemZ290187815472QQihZ019QQcategoryZ72478Q QssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
edit 4: Finally i found it! Autotecnica (aka Monza i think) Dominator 25mm inlet/outlet dual port BOV http://www.autotecnica.com.au/performance_13.html I imagine it would be fairly cheap ~$150 tops from autobarn
i've started a new thread to talk about the cheap BOVs, please see:

hey i bought it from Turbosmart through my business name cause they don't sell direct to consumer. I paid $374.00 (round up the cents). it was a straight replacement from standard, the only thing you have to cut the vacume line (supplied) to suit your application but it took me 5min.
The tools you need are
* Star head screwdriver
* Needly nose plyers
* Razor blade (to cut the vacume line)

i was reading on the turbosmart website that the 'dual port' model is 3 BOVs in one.. you can set it up to go full atmos for full sound, or full plumb back for no sound.... or in dual port mode meaning (i assume) half half...
"Three BOVs in one. The Dual Port can be configured to vent to the atmosphere, back into the air intake or both! Road-legal Plumb Back system, Supersonic for the race track, or Dual Port for the best of both worlds."

Have u tried it at highspeed roads for a couple of hours?
Is there any problem and for those with higher boost?
i am searching because my collins bov causes check engine at the highway..
And i am looking for a atmo bov..

i drive an hour each way for work, and never had a problems with it.
Remember its a 50:50 bov not full atmo.
And it vents to recirc before it vents to atmo. You can tell this cause the ports for recirc and atmo are not at level points on the bov, the atmo point sits lower than the recirc one. thus it opens first.

Just finished installing my turbosmart dual and took it for a wuick hard spin. BOV sound was faint at best. Me thinks I have it at around 50:50. Will test it again tomorrow as had to bath and put bubs to sleep. But at the moment a bit disappointed with sound, espsh when I've heard other Rcolts with the same bov (from recent Mt Nebo cruise). Will try softest setting tomorrow, hopefully will get loud enough that I don't ahve to strain to hear it...

hey rik :) 2.5 turns from hard is supposedly the optimum setting.. see how that goes

Yeah I'm going to give it a go tomorrow. But I had it pretty soft and still was pretty quiet.

i run higher boost, .8bar and a TS BOV and i run 2.5 turns as well, anything harder and you have to basically get full boost to get the psst of the BOV.

Well guys i have had more trouble from mine this last 2 weeks.
I have developed a slight compressor surge from it, only when shifter at the 3000-4000 range you notice the surge just before it vents atmo.
So i put the standard one back on, and it went away.
Put the TS back on and it was back, only slight.
I was running it wirh 3 turns from full hard.
Now at the drags i tried it with 2 turns from hard, on the return leg i was get MAJOR!!! compressor surge before it vented atmo, and it was barley venting atmo, when i say major it was full on VL turbo style.
I then proceeded to go 4 turns from hard and it went away, i also noticed some what looked to be iceing occouring on the inside of the piston.
So this post is for guys to watch out what there bov is doing.
Also note guys mine was 2nd hand from ebay, and i have had some slight issues with it jamming in the rain. And im using a different lubricant on it.
Im more than likey going to rebuild it again, and relube with theturbosmart lube, and might replace the spring.
So thoes guys dont be put off getting one, they rock, im the only person who is having trouble with it.

didn't you have problems with condensation before? where's this water or 'icing' coming from?

i think the water getting onto it may be causing your problems. Put a cover over the trumpet so you dont get water into the BOV

the icing wont be from getting water in it, i noticed the water at the drags last night, you will get the conendation from expanding gasses thru a small hole, air conditioning work on this principal.
It hasnt been raining much before the icing issues so it wont be that, a week plus of rain, plus i had the valve out in the dry spell, and no water issues then.
I really need to check the vacume tube isnt blocked, and then all i can think of is lubricant is wrong type.

Guys who are running the turbosmart dual port with the adjustment 2.5 turns out from max, question - do you get a fluttering sound out of the bov, like it is not releasing all of the air, or is it a clean shot of air sound?

you want to adjust it so there is no/minimal flutter on low boost. 2.5turns wont work for everyone as the springs, etc. are always going to be slightly different

The flutter isnt going to be much of an issue, mate of mine had a 200sx No BOV at all for arund 100k, pulled the turbo of for an Upgrade and there was no shaft play other then the usuall.
OK i'm confused (not hard to be for me), If you set it 2.5 turns from the hardest setting, you will only get the BOV sound in the higher rev range, not the lower range?

2.5 turns, you hear it whenever you get more than .3bar of boost really. so it doesnt take much, but the bov sound isnt as loud with less boost going throu it.

Was in the Auto Shop this morning picking up a Z142a and some Penzoil and staring at me from the back wall was Turbosmart DP EVO BOV with a lowly $235.00 on the ticket.. Suffice to say the Colt is now getting an upgrade.. :)

i bought this bov and it doesnt work in my czt ..
i tried it at full atmo to full vent on without the trompet..
if u are in half throtle over 0 bar to 0.7 it gives me a safe mode..
i assume that it is because the evc...
it worked on other czts with exhaust, kn and restrictor off without any probl....

Got mine as well... Tried Panaua's BOV first from fully soft to fully hard and it worked fine...
Yesterday when fully soft I got my first CEL from the bov...Switched off the engine, turned it 2,5 turns from hard and it seems to be working ok...
The only problem I can see is that I have a bit of fluttering...Anything to suggest? Should I try going softer?
