mitsubishi have three different shaped oil filters - all are suitable and apparently do the same job, i just get one in particular..

Stock rcolt oil filter is part# MD136466 $18.48 at service time.
Was wondering why you actually need a filter? If you have blown ya warranty and are servicing your own car, use any filter ya like as long as ya change it every 5k...

The part number that fauxpas quoted is correct, but will cost less than $18.48 if you buy it over the counter. Its a common practise for them to charge extra when they provide the stuff during the service.

 Buying an oil filter does not mean you have blown your warranty.
I do my own mid-interval oil changes.

yeh but adam doing ur own oil change is still questionable if it'll affect our warranty.. thats what fauxpas is sayin
sayin that i haven't had any issues in the 45,000 odd km's i've travelled haven't had any issues to date, but i also haven't have any real warranty claims :p

Unless your a licenced mechanic you can kiss good by the 5 years road side assistance, and your 10 years 130,000k warrenty.
Then also warrenty clames on the engine will be interesting.
But here i am talking about you 5000 km LOG BOOK serives on the Ralliart colt only.

I'd buy genuine mitsubishi then... Would hate to think what the mitsu guys would think seeing a non genuine filter there even if you do stick to handbook intervals...

if you used a non dealer mechanic to do your service then they would use non mitsubishi oil filters yea?
also i would think servicing your car is better than not servicing it, from a warranty standpoint.

Maybe, but if you get a mechanic to do a handbook service, to keep warranty, he must use genuine mitsubishi parts...

5000k between services is already very low, so doing your own at say 2500 between handbook services is a little overkill, unless ya drive ya car hard. If you do give ya car curry, then just an oil change would suffice at 2500...

i thought it was oil change at 5000, oil change and filter at 10,000

To clear things up, if one wants a non dealer mechanic to service the car, he will need to be MTA certified and also must use geniune mitsubishi oil filter, in order for the warranty to be valid. For the type of oil, as long as its of the accepted rating within the manual, it doesn't matter which brand you choose as all different mitsubishi service department uses different brands and rating as well.
As for servicing your own in between intervals, from a by law point of view you do void your warranty. But the thing is, as long as you use a geniune oil filter, no one in the world can tell if its been self-serviced. Therefore, adamw is correct for what he's saying.
Spaceboy: Yes, its written as 5000 for oil change and plus filter at 10000. But all mechanic will tell you from experience that you should change your filter every single time. Also, its only an extra 10-20 bucks, might as well you know ;)

If one was to religously do their car every 2500k and didn't mind getting under their car and get dirty and also wanted mitsu to do the handbook services... one could;
1. Take car to mitsu for service
2. Once home, dump and save oil and filter and install aftermarket filter and new oil or same oil...
3. At 2500 do oil and filter change and put mitsu filter on...
That way you get your 2500k intervals and mitsu sees their equipment removed when they service...
Everyone's happy :D
