View Full Version : Would anyone give a try Federal 595EVO tyres?

I have been upgrade to 17" rims with Yoko S.drive, has done 20,000kms but they don't wear much, still have plenty of tread =not grippy , and my Rcolt's steering response was bad with the 17" on it ,didn't think there's a big different with the 1" bigger rim,it makes the handling poor.
Therefore i decided to go back to factory rims with Federal 595EVO,and ordered it last week and hopefully the stocks will be arrived tomorrow, cost $155.90 each.
I have used the entry model, the 595 on my corolla sportivo before ,they have fairy stiff sidewall and the grip is good but only had them put on for about 4 weeks and trade in to a Rcolt ,so haven't really give it to it,don't really know its limit ?
Any comments on this Federal 595EVO ?:)

Never tried them but I'll likely be replacing the yokies when they are shot with these federals off ebay or a local tyre guy if he can get them for little money too... $95 + del

cheap and nasty... u won't get as good allround performance.. (i.e. in the wet )
i think some of the federal's aren't bad.. but are only ok in the dry and what not - i'm not sure bout this model specifically tho

I own a tyre shop, and I am not too impressed with the federal product... they are noisy, hard and lack grip because of those two factors.

Well, dunno about all those things. The RS595 (which granted is pretty close to a semi) is soft as jelly baby, sure they noisy but you'd expect that with a tyre with a pattern so aggresive and with so much lateral grip, and just on that, there is PLENTY of grip.

Are they expensive?
How would you peg them against the AD07?

I have a couple of favourites at the moment. The Sumitomo Z3 is an awsome tyre... I have them on my F6 Typhoon and my previous car (XR5 Turbo).
The next best thing is the Italian made 'Marangoni'!!! Again a very nice tyre with masses amount of grip.
The best thing about these tyres as well, is they are not going to break the bank balance!

Not sure who you're asking that question to, but I'll be risking a budget tyre next as on the roads I drive on I'm not looking to go faster... I don't mind some slide action...
To me, $250 for a replacement advan is a little over the top for a tyre though I do admit they are a nice tyre... The Federal SS595 is $95 each and you can get the Dunlop as supplied on XR6/T/8 falcons in 205/16 for $140...
The elcheapo Clear HP166 tyres I had on my old ghia stuck like glue compared to more expensive tyres, but gave little feedback to the driver...
The sad thing is many people buy tyres cause of a funky name or they like the look of a tyre... Not many push a tyre to its limits...
For the avg commuter, a $100 tyre would suffice...

I'm going to be diplomatic and quote from Top Gear "A driver's ability does not necessarily increase with the size of his wallet"... Meaning you can throw a driver behind the wheel of a good car, but it doesn't mean the driver becomes a better driver...

i'm not talkin bout who's a better driver or not.. all i'm sayin is majority of rcolter's bought their cars for a sporting drive, i don't think ppl drive their rcolt like a normal car... i don't know how u could contain urself too!! :p lol
the rcolt isn't a regular road commuting car.. i dont care wat anyone says! :D

I'm not saying anything about better drivers or worse, I'm simply saying just because a person buys an rcolt, doesn't automatically make them a better driver just as much as buying a luxo-barge ghia or calais doesn't automatically give you kids, a beer gut and adult onset diabetes! :D
wonder what the wear on the semi slick would be like...
http://www.federaltyres.com.au/ss595rs
probably shithouse, but they look the bollocks!!

One thing you do have to remember about these tyre comparisons such as the targa blurb, is that you will obviously get better wear from a tyre such as the SS595i on a small car such as the pegueot - plus the fact that they are being sponsored by Federal! After all, they are not going to say that they were crap! It would be different if they ran them on the pegueot, as well as on a larger car and a turbo 4WD where the tires tend to wear out more easily.
Alba, any semi-slick will have crap wear compared to a normal road tyre, they are more for your weekend club racer, or if your can afford a second set of wheels for weekend jaunts.:)
In the end, we are probably best off scanning other forums RE their experiences with certain brands of tyres - especially those that do any sort of track work (other front wheel drive and turbo 4WD sites).

I agree, but if they are a lot cheaper than ad07's then may be worth a try...

yeh i am thinking about it
i've got a bloke chasing down a price
would only be used on the road for a month or two before i get the funds together for wheels
going to rotate this weekend to try and squeeze a few 000 more kms

no way in hell i would want a semi slick on the colt for regular driving, it would be nuts in the wet, even with ASC!, i have a mate with a WRX who says semis in the rain is nuts on his car.

They arent cheap, but yes they are better than the AD07 we have fitted as OEM equipment, in saying that AD07's are pretty darn good. Macca is right though, as a daily, semi's are rubbish. They wear too quickly, garbage in the wet and SUPER noisy. I wouldnt bother on the R-colt unless you dont drive it every day and its a weekend proposition only, as the wear would see a set out at about 12,000kms.
They would also be good for a 2nd set of rims, as they would be a decent tyre to use on a track day. I have a 2nd car at home that barely gets driven so in that sense I'd whack em on for sure, but by the time you get those, you may as well spend a few extra hundred and get Toyo R888's ;)
yeh
i'm thinking some 17s for street with modest rubber and the stock rims with some track rubber

Agreed on the semi slicks. One of my buddies just threw a couple on the front of his turbo'd corolla. Even though he went from a 14.1 1/4 mile to a 13.15 with them on, he said the same thing about the road noise & how shit they for road use unless they have a serious amount of heat in them. He runs toyo semi slicks with some bullshit crazy agressive pattern. They're not legal for street use, so why even go there? There's nothing wrong with the yokohamas supplied from factory as far as grip goes.. I stopped counting the number of reviews on the rcolt that said stuff like 'this car has endless grip' etc etc. Once you get a set of 17's with different rubber, you'll feel the difference immediately. I have toyo proxes 4 and they're nowhere near as sticky as the yoko's.

If we are the type to get different rims as well, the beauty is we can have daily driver rims/wheels combo and a trackday/touge combo...

Did I tell u about how there's a FAUX PARK at Tweed Heads (NSW/QLD Border) ? spotted it there the other weekend.. had no significance in the 23 years I lived there till then.. With all of the hoopedy-hoop lah you talk about parks and your nick having the word 'faux' i thought it was pretty funny.. i'd like to see you drive through that one heh.. you'd end up off a jetty :)

I don't own a luxury barge though =P....cost too much to run...and priced at the same $$ as an evo, not a hard choice on which to pick...hahha..

the federal rs are legal for street use, when i was ringing federal for stockists i asked them.
