hey guys,

ive been driving my new colt for a bit over a month now..i bought it as an ex demo from a dealer so its pretty much bran new..just recently ive noticed when i rev the lil pocket rocket over 3000 rpm it sounds a bit rough and doesnt rev as smoothly as it once did!! just wondering if anyone has had this problem or would have any idea of what it could be!!

cheers :(

When you say it runs rough, do you mean the engine is missing, or just that the power feels a bit dull through the midrange & upper RPM? What fuel are you using 95ron or 98, and how many kms has it done?:)

has the 5000k oil change been done? - could either be that or maybe ur spark plugs ..

all i've noticed is that the car likes to get the oil changed every 5k and that helps keep it in order

Rcolt services are at 1,500 and 5,000k... If you picked yours up as a demo, they should still have done these and stamped your book accordingly... Check this to see as it may have been overlooked...

How hard do you rev her out? Do you blow the cobwebs out at all?

I agree, check that all your services are correct and are up to date, take the thing out for a good blast on a cold night (I'm talking to redline, not 4500rpm), and then if you are not satisfied, head back to your dealer for some answers. I know you mentioned that you had used Vortex98, but I find that my colt reacts very differently with various 98 octane fuels, some good, some not so good. I still find BP Ultimate the best, with the rest a real mixed bag.
As a last resort, you could always fill up with some 98 from somewhere else, dis-connect your battery for a while (20mins - not really sure), and then reconnect it, as your computer may have tuned itself to run on some crappy fuel from Caltex (varies from station to station). Worth a try, even if just out of interest!:)

rough in upper RPM range i would usually point to these factors :

1: dirty or low on engine oil ( check your dipstick ASAP )
2: engine oil the wrong weight and viscosity
3: stay clear from vortex fuel as it seems to be very inconsistent ( BP98 )
4: check your air filter is clean and airflow is not blocked
5: check your spark plugs to see if they are "coffee brown" in color.

if you are not confident in doing these things yourself just take it to your local dealer.

and please if the car is clearly not running well DO NOT rev it to redline ! because if your oil is low or dirty you could break a big end bearing on the crank or blow a piston ring.

EDIT : if you take a car with a blown crank bearing and it's low on engine oil or its missed a service you have a snowballs chance in hell in getting them to honor the warranty.

As above mention, try changing eng oil first. I had my car brand new and drove about 5000k in about 1 month. The car feels sluggish after i reach 4000k with regular driving (and some hard driving as well). But once i change the eng oil (sport) and filter, the car runs smooth as.

dont worry you've got a pretty strong mitsubishi warranty to cover your car. If you blow up the engine then you get a new one :P

sounds like a bad batch or fuel or perhaps dirty oil. Your next service should fix things up

Yeah, fuel plays such a huge part ... all the bloody BP ran out of 98 Oct and i was force to use Caltex ... and i can feel the immediate sluggishness .... sigh
