Through my mate's recommendation, i bought myself to get my car tinted with his friend. Very happy with the outcome. Now, the car's fully black. Makes me feel safer to park on the street as you can't really see inside the car now.

PM me if anyone's interested in doing the tint to their rcolt. Will post up some after tint pic tommorrrow ;)

You can see from the 2 rcolt in the pic and mine's dark in the front and the other, you can see through the front window.

Heya mine came with rear privacy windows so I had to get mine tinted to match the back as well. The unfortunate thing is I realise that my tinting is getting scratched as it's wound down and up. Do you get that problem?

Yes, my internal window tint's are scratched. Isn't exactly a pretty sight, but at least people can't see it from outside :) Therefore, its something you have to live with. This is a known issue with all colt (n/a or turbo)

I did mine at TintProfessor...costed me $110. Since there is this lifetime warranty I'm going to wait till the scratch becomes super bad then I'll go get it fixed again.

What darkness is the tint?

I don't remember but it's the darkest legal tint. Still the privacy windows are much darker.

Hey guys
Im going to get my tinted in about a weeks time. While speaking to the tint guy he mentioned that a lot of the newer mitsubishi have hard plastics coverings which causes the scratching. He said to remedy the problem a thin felt like material is stuck the plastic covering insuring no more scratches. Will let you guys know after a couple months of use if any scratches become evident.

If you're able to find out if we can get the thin felt thing ourselves :) You dont have to wait a couple of months...the scratches should start to happen within a week and will just get worse (also depending on your frequency of opening the windows). Anyway which tint company are you doing it at?

Its a small company in Adelaide which is renowned for their great jobs. They are not the cheapest around but do have great service. They use the Sun-Gard film.
When i see him again ill ask him where he buys the felt.

I just got my fronts tinted 15% to match the rear. I am unsure if he has done a good job. For the people who have had their fronts tinted does your tint go right to the edges all around the driver and passenger window or is it a bit cut off at the front of the windows?

I am going to take pics of mine and post it so you can see. If you can take pics of yours and post it that would be great too.

Is it cut off at the front edge? (closest to the A pillar)

i got mine done by John Hughes for free... and that was around 3 years ago, and not a single problem with the scratching, i seem to be in the VAST minority when it comes to that though...

My whole front windows have been tinted without any problems whatsoever. I also had the little section in front of the A pillar done for aesthetic reasons.

Mine also has stuffed tint from previous owner. Got a massive chunk taken out of the drivers side tint.
Not too sure if it was thereafter fixed by the recall (there is a black and white paper recall sticker for something but can't make it out)
Gonna get tint removed, DIY the rubber strips up with felt/moleskin and then take it back down to get them re-done to match the privacy glass.

I really hate that darkest legal tint doesn't match the privacy glass. I have actually considered trading privacy glass for clear and getting it tinted so it all matches. It looks stupid, especially when the car is dewy in the morning.

i still cant understand how a darker than legal tint privacy glass is legal?? backwards country.

my front tint is scratched up pretty bad, when it comes time to replace i was just going to have the rubber wiper removed so nothing touches it so it can never scratch. even with felt, if a coarse bit of sand gets in there it will just chew out the tint the same

It does seem a little silly, but I have the darkest legal tint on the front windows and the difference is hardly noticeable.

I don't know who did mine. Dealer had it done. The difference is noticeable. On my Lancer too.

There are only laws governing the darkness of FRONT windows. Any windows behind the driver can be as dark as you like. Or removed. Or those reflective tints are ok too.

I have no problem with scratching and my tint is 4 years old.

P.S. A good tint job you shouldn't see the edges of the tint.

is privacy glass only allowed on certain vehicles ? like 4wd's hatches and vans ?

i quite like the colt looking like that. you get hammered by in summer though !

edit:
http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/downloads/vsi/vsi03_rev3.pdf

this is an old (2003) vehicle standard however ... don't know / don't think they have changed since then.

Either way it's impregnated in the glass from the factory, so the RTA would find it hard to get people to remove it (yes, there have been some cases of people being questioned by police over priviacy glass, thinking it was overly dark aftermarket tint??)

I heard that the law had recenetly changed in SA increasing the percentage of the shade of tint legal.

anyone else heard that? my impression was that in the past, tinting the fronts to match the backs was illegal becasue of the darkness required. however, now i dont believe the fronts would be deemed illegal. does 35% sound about right?

skyrex
18-06-2010, 03:57 PM
If they law had changed to a higher percentage, that would be making only light tint's legal.
The percentage ratio is how much light still passes through the glass after tint, not a percentage of how much light doesnt pass through.

Ie, if 1000 photons hit the tint, only 350 would pass through on 35% tint...

35% is the legal limit in NSW, you would be looking around 20-25% tint required to match the privacy glass shade. My mate has 22% on his black Galant VR4, hasn't been looked at once for it. If you have a dark coloured car, generally speaking you can get away going a smidge darker by eyeball. If you have a white or lighter coloured car, the tint tends to contrast better and appears to be darker than it really is.

fwiw...

I had bullshit 20% tint or lower before (where the mobile tinter refused to give me a receipt for).

Could not reverse park at nights because it was so dark .. most stupid thing I had ever done.

Privacy glass can be done on anything as long as the window is behind the 90 degree view line of the driver.
It costs more than standard glass, hence only being available on VRX and such.

I believe they don't do front windows due to different legislation in different locations.
